Otherland

Has anyone read the Tad Williams Otherland series?
I just read the first book, and thought it was extremely good - anyone read the others in the series?

Re: Otherland

What's it about? If it's as good as The Wheel of Time, I'll certainly be interested in trying them on for size.

Re: Otherland

There's a short discussion of the Otherland books on my board if you are interested.
I read the first book, but have yet to read any of the others.

Re: Otherland

I'd say it is definitely as good as the Wheel of Time, though it is more sci-fi than fantasy. One similarity - large books! ~grin~
Anyway, it is about virtual reality, and has some really good characters and themes - I would definitely recommend it, and will hopefully be picking up two of the other books in the series today!

Re: Otherland

Okay, I'll check it out if I run across it at the local library. I'm in need of a new book series anyway, as I'm running out of Wheel of Time books. I'm working on the second to last one, and running through them at a VERY fast pace.

Re: Otherland

Okay, but I'll have to wait another three weeks before getting to them. We were at the library a few days ago and I forgot. (Sheepish shrug)

So now I'll just have to wait.

Re: Otherland

For those of you who have read it, how does Otherland compare with Williams' other series Memory Sorrow and Thorn ? I am considering adding Otherland to my summer reading list.

Re: Otherland

Otherland is the only thing of Williams' that I have read. Sorry I can't help more.

Re: Otherland

They're both very good. Otherland is possibly better.

Anyone read the last book? Ties up loose ends nicely

Re: Otherland

I have read I think all of his books so far. I loved the Dragon Bone books and I also started with Tail Chasers Song. Otherland I feel is a departure from Fantasy to Sci-Fi and I liked these books also. But... I think Williams is a better Fantasy Writer. I hope he continues to write more of this genre in the future.

Eesh, mega old thread. Anyway, I just finished reading 'em. Fantastic books. That last book really did tie up all the loose ends.
Plus, I really liked how Orlando became a ranger in 'middle earth', and how the life that sellers created could be out there somewhere, and that perhaps, they would remember the first people.
So... anyone else read 'em? Lief, did you ever track them down?

The Otherland series was slightly disappointing to me. It's a great story, and incredibly creative, but there are long stretches of extremely boring material in books 2 and 3. Another problem I had with the series was a lack of likeable characters. There are so many characters in the "main character" group that are just shells that it keeps you at a distance. I found myself focusing on the setting and the story a lot more to compensate.
I much prefered Memory Sorrow and Thorn.
I wouldn't recommend Williams's newest book to anyone - War of the Flowers. What a disappointment!
