Tom Bombadil

What exactly is he? and, why didn't they keep him in the movie?

You might as well ask 'Did Elves have pointed ears?' or 'Did Balrogs have wings?'. The answers are no and yes in that order, ( ) but my point is that this has been the subject of a long debate.

Basically, as I understand it, Peter Jackson cut him out because he did not feel that Tom was an important character to the plot.
