Time Zones and Places!
Valandil was just talking about starting this thread, and I've been thinking about doing it too, so here it is! The thread that lets you know when your friends might be on, and when they're most likely getting their beauty rest and also the country they live in, if they want to share that (I enjoy knowing the nationalities of the Mooters)
This one will be like the Picture Link thread - I'll keep updated as people post their times and places. I'll also post the "when it's noon in California, it's X here" time, for my convenience, because I"m the thread-starter, neh neh! (with thanks to Earniel for the phrase) Also, dst means "daylight savings time", an annoying American (I think) invention to mix people up - we "fall back" an hour in the fall, then "spring forward" in the spring ============================================== Artanis : GMT + 1 (9 pm) azalea : GMT - 5, Florida, USA (3 pm) Beard of Pants : GMT + 12, New Zealand (8 am) Beruthial's Cat : GMT - 5, New York, USA (3 pm) brownjenkins : GMT - 5, Boston, Massachusetts, USA (3 pm) Cassiopeia : GMT + 10, East Australia (6 am) crickhollow : GMT - 8, ??? I live in Today Land. (Not Tomorrow Land, as is commonly mistaken. Most of you here are all behind. )
Aussies on the East Coast (Me, Millane, Cass, DoLC etc) all live in GMT +10. I'm usually on when the Americans are (mostly) sleeping and when the Europeans aren't working or studying like they're supposed to. 3-8am US EST. Though Cass is usually on at like 10am my time because at the time I'm on, in the evenings, she starts to fall asleep at the computer or something. |

Daylight Savings is good! It's already getting darker earlier now. I don't know about you, but I like my sunlight. Yeah, JD is literally online 24/7 (But not necessarily on Entmoot). He doesn't know how to sleep, that one. R*an, you're up late tonight. Go to sleep! Last edited by Linaewen : 03-17-2004 at 04:10 AM. |

We're actually +11 atm due to day light savings, although I don't think that applies for all that much longer.
I used to come on in the mornings my time when I was on hols, but now that I have started uni, usually around 6ish, when the Simpsons is on. In terms of nationality, I am a Canadian-Australian. But only by parentage. Alas, the only time I have ever been to Canada was so long ago it is beyond my capacity to remember the visit. |

As for why we have it - it actually makes sense. It's to keep the days similar basically. We're on the east end of the time zone. I think you are on the extreme end of the pacific time zone. The time changes make more sense depending on what end of the zone a place is located. Most of Indiana doesn't have daylight savings time. Which is actually a pain in the neck, because then some places do and others don't. Always having to check ahead before going somewhere.

NZ is GMT +12. Although that'll be wrong at the moment, since we are in DST as well.

I'm in +2, so it would be 10 pm here, when it's noon in California.

I'm in GMT exactly (strangely enough, since its Greenwich Mean Time ) so when it's noon in California, it's 8 pm here. That's the time I'm mostly on, early evening, except for today - it's currently 12:40 pm.
DST is a British invention, thank you very much, though it was first introduced in Germany British Summer Time starts in the UK on March 28th this year.

I see that Rian already got me (the nerve... attempting to deny me a post in addition to a thread!! ... )
Anyhoo... I thought a nice ADDITIONAL bit of info would be to tell everyone what time it is HERE when I post this. Then you can easily note differences between what time I TELL you it is, and what time your SCREEN says my post was made!! It's 8:59 am on 3-17-04 The rest of you could edit your posts to add this info.

I also am in Greenwich Mean Time
and i hate British Summer Time, with all the clock cjanging it messes my head up BTW, it is currently 3:03 pm, ish on Wednesday 17th of march, 2004 can i ask the americans (and anyone else who does it) why do you put your dates as month/day/year ie today, we say 17/03/04 and yet u say 03/17/04 the correct way (ie UK day/month/year) is much more logical i am one of those that is generally online 24/7 also i drink copious amounts of coffee Last edited by Last Child of Ungoliant : 03-17-2004 at 11:06 AM. |

I'm in GMT+1. We have also dst. I thought everybody had it in the same dates since Windows time automatically changes twice a year.
I'm one of those that should be working when Lin is online BTW, there is a cool screen saver that shows how night is coming over the different time zones. It looks very realistic Here's the link http://www.geocities.com/drgportugal/essaver/

I think we do it because that's how we say it... we'll say that 'it's March seventeenth, two thousand four'. Now in German, I know they reverse it and say 'Es ist den Seibsten Martz (SP?), Jahre Vier und zwei tausand' (I'm fudging the 'thousand'... been too long!) I don't know about French or other languages, but I've assumed the way the numbers were arranged was mostly in accordance with how they were most naturally spoken. The UK however, because of proximity to and interaction with the continent, may have found it easier to adjust to them.

Daylight Savings Time
When we were little kids and my older brother knew everything, he told me that Benjamin Franklin invented Daylight Savings Time. Some of you can probably check that much easier than I could... any takers?

i was always under the impression that british summer time was developed in uk, as a response to the longer days in summer as opposed to it getting dark at 5 pm in winter
