The House of the Spirits - Isabel Allende
I just read this novel. It's not necessarily one of my favourites, but it is indeed very good. Basically, it starts out chronicling the life of a Chilean coal miner who eventually becomes a major right-wing politician, then develops into a story about his children and grandchildren, not really having a solid plot but rather moving the pace along by continually dropping hints about the fates of each character.
Then in the end, everything is tied up into the rise of the Socialists in Chile (led by Allende's real-life uncle, who is present as an unnamed character in this novel), leading up to Pinochet's coup. It's all very clever. Has anyone read this book besides myself? |
