Sauron's Appearance

Here's something that I noticed while re-reading "Of the Rings of Power and the Third Age":
Quote:
A mask still could he wear so that if he wished he might deceive the eyes of Men, seeming to them wise and fair.
That made me think a moment and search for this passage in the Akallabêth:
Quote:
But Sauron was not of mortal flesh, and though he was robbed now of that shape in which he had wrought so great an evil, so that he could never again appear fair to the eyes of Men, yet his spirit arose out of the deep and passed as a shadow and black wind over the sea, and came back to Middle-Earth and to Mordor that was his home.
I thought he lost his fair form in the Fall of Númenor. Did I miss something?

Yes. The Fall of Númenor took place after Annatar. The forging of the Rings of Power was begun in II 1500, and Andor fell in II 3319.

Your first citation is from the time while he was working with the elves to create the rings of power.

the second is after the fall of numenor, which was some years later.

Oh, I see. Thanks for the clarification. I thought that the way it was presented in the Silmarillion was in chronological order. Since the Akallabêth came before 'Of the Rings of Power and the Third Age', I assumed that it happened before. Silly me.

It understandable. Your master, Sauron, does not ecourage his servants at Minas Morgul to read the history of his failures.
