Scrabble as an income supplement

I won $120 Canadian (about US$80) last weekend playing a Scrabble tournament... placed third in my division at Western Canadian Scrabble Championships.

Not nearly as easy as it might sound, but...

If you are the kind of Scrabble player that trounces everybody else in the house, and is in dire need of some serious competition (and perhaps some prize money) I strongly recommend that you start playing competitively. There is a list of registered North American clubs here, and tournament listings here.

Hey, congrats! I love Scrabble but I'm not that good at it, although I did beat my Grandma once, and between you and me, that's saying something!

Trust me, she's really good.

I like Scrabble, but the way I REALLY like to play it is somewhat different.

The only rules are:
1. you can't use real words
2. you must be able to pronounce them
3. upon placing the word, you must supply a definition

It's insanely fun! I recommend you try it once in a while, even if it's just to break up the monotony of 'real' Scrabble for several hours straight. It wakes up the imagination.

Congratulations Iron Parrot! I think adult competitions are very difficult, at least that's been my experience with flower arranging and horticulture. These people go for the throat! I'm very impressed!

Treebeard your way sounds really fun, although I also like regular scrabble I'm horrible though and my dad knows a ton of words so I never have a chance. Congratz Iron Parrot.

That's so cool! I wish I was good at scrabble - my mom always beats me by like 100 points...okay maybe not that much, but it's by a lot!

Treebeard your way of playing sound rather amusing. It wud be good for me seeming as i'm not that good an english speller anyway. The amount of times my brother has said i hav mild dyslexia, is rather funny

My dad's line of my family are know for playing Scrabble. I'm terrible with words, so I'm not very good, but my Dad and uncles and aunts are very good.

I've played that but it needs two things to make it good
1. Funny, creative, smart people.
2. Tired-hyperness

On another note... gah! My rating only went from 980 to 1020! I still run the risk of falling back into the bottom division if I'm not careful at my next tournament...

Huh. I've done nearly the same thing. I covet my spontanaeity over my meager scrabble-skills, which I do not forsee improving upon.

Except I don't make money off of it yet...
