Narnia discrepancy?
the beloved, yet falling apart paperback copy of the L,W and W that I grew up with says that the chief of jadis' secret police is named Fenris Ulf.
My mom finally bought a new set of the books, and his name has been changed to Maugrim. Who has been tampering with Lewis, and which version is correct? I have to admit that I can't think of him as anything but Fenris Ulf, but does anyone know which name appeared in the origional version? maybe it was only done to the american versions like HP and the philosopher's/sorcerer's stone? But why would they mess with a name I mean, that's different than HP.

It calls him Fenris in my version, but I seem to remember the name Maugrim from somewhere. I have a book called Companion to Narnia that would help, but of course I can't find it right now. I'll hunt for it and let you know what I find if no one else has the answer.

i recall it as Maugrim, but i know i've heard the other name somewhere. *shrug* i'm sure we'll figure it out.
note-shouldn't this thread be in Sci-fi/Fantasy?

The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe. And yes, I'm moving this to Sci-fi/Fantasy.

I have two different versions of the book, but in both the name Fenris Ulf is used. Maybe Maugrim was the name of another wolf and there was some confusion when they made later editions?

Maugrim... is that the name of some sort of wolf in The Lord Of The Rings?

In tolkien, the Dwarves are called Naugrim.
My copies as a young lad called him Fenris.

Okay everybody, I have finally found my book "Companion to Narnia", so I'll be able to answer any Narnia related question you have (well, almost any). Maugrim was the name of the wolf in the British edition, it is changed to Fenris Ulf in the American edition. A quote:
"No evidence has yet come to light to indicate whether or when Lewis made this change for his American readers." So if you have a British ed,. his name will be Maugrim; American, it'll be Fenris Ulf. I guess it would depend on the publisher of your version. They say the name Fenris Ulf was "taken from the great wolf of Scandinavian mythology" and Maugrim probably means either "savage jaws" or "ill will". Last edited by azalea : 07-23-2002 at 10:29 PM. |

That's interesting! I wonder why the editors or Lewis thought it should be changed for the U.S. edition. Thanks for looking this up.

Hey, did you guys know that Lewis was good friends with Tolkien? Apparently (don't quote me on this, a friend told it to me but I'm not sure about the reliability, it's interesting though) Lewis was writing L,W,W first and showed it to Tolkien, who told Lewis that it was the worst piece of trash he had ever seen and that Lewis should put it away and never work on it again. According to my friend, Lewis had writer's block for 7 years thereafter. Look where it is now, though!

"...wost piece of trash..." Ouch!
On the first page or so of The Screwtape Letters it says that the book is dedicated to Tolkien.
