Comic Relief
So, in The Fellowship of the Ring, Merry and Pippon took over the "need" for comic relief. In The Two Towers, we saw that Gimli took over Merry and Pippons job, so I'm thinking that PJ wont be using any of them agian for CR. So, my question is, who will do it this time? Think about it, who else COULD do it, I didn't like Merry and Pippon and Gimli doing it, but just think about the other caricters doing it in ROTK:
Legolas: he can't do it, he's an elf! Gandalf: He's Gandalf, what can I say? Gandalf is to strong, series, and everything else Aragorn: He's about to become king, how could they posably do it to him? Samwise: His part in this movie is to important to be messed with, this is Sam's big moment, Sam's turn to be faithfull, they can't do that to Sammy! Frodo: Frodo is basically out of it, the ring is taking over his mind, and after Shelobs lier, he is totally dependant on Sam, just about Gollum: he is a very important charicter, and I think that he is to important for them to mess up his charicter. Shelob: Very important, but small part, and she has to be terrible the whole time, and heynis (can't spell, so I'll change that to plane old evil) to do comic relief Other Chariters, soldiers, Arwen ect.: parts arn't big anouph, and even if they were, they arn't the type, there to bussy fighting and all of that type of stuff!

PJ might have inserted little jokes to ease the strain of watching the huge war that is about to happen. In FOTR and TTT, some characters seemed to be funnier than the rest, but each had their own laughs. Maybe the comedy will be little quips here and there.
By the by, I hate how PJ portrayed Gimli as half-witted comic relief. I know he is not at fault, audiences need to be entertained. But still, the dwarves didn't send Gimli to fumble around. Grrr.

He is at blame. Audiences aren't a bunch of drivelling idiots. They can have other entertainment than cheap pokes at Dwarves, or idiotic Hobbits.

I totally agree. But you gotta admit they were funny i.e. "The closer we are to danger the farther we from harm." Although when I went to see TTT it was like no one had a sense of homor(sp?) it was dead quiet the whole time (with the exception of the movie).

You two are lucky that you have such mature fellow movie-goers.
I saw LOTR last night and the place was half-full of people who did not care about the movie. An adolescent couple was even making out a few rows in front. I wished I had some popcorn to toss at them while they were re-enacting the love scenes of Arwen and Aragorn.

I don't think there will be any comic relief in the next movie. In my opinion, it's the most serious out of all three, with the war and Cirith Ungol and the crowning of Aragorn and all. There may be a few funny comments here and there, but nothing major like the mockery of Gimli (they shouldn't have made him seem like an idiot! He's the best Dwarf and he's got those cool axes!) At least, I hope so. But there better be nothing like:
Gandalf: Phew! Frodo you stink! Frodo: I know. I had several helping of beans and garlic bread at the supper. Gandalf: Aaaah! Run away! Frodo: Burrrrrrp! *pfft* ...or I will have to send my cousin's hamster on PJ and co.

well, being a silly optimist im really hoping PJ takes a higher road for rotk and maybe doesnt make any specific character into comic relief but yeah, maybe adds a few 'tension breaking' jokes Near the end it will lighten up, so yeah...*crosses fingers*

you can't have a movie as long as a LotR movie w/o comic relief- it won't sell to the general (read: unobsessed) public. I think they'll lean towards legolas and Aragorn making quips and such. they can do the same with Faramir too, I suppose.
just my opinion- and I don't think that it'll hurt the feel of the movie in any way, like it would if sam became all comical and jank. -DoE |

The Gimli thing is my biggest gripe with PJ. I can deal with Arwen and all that stuff, but I cannot see any justification whatsoever for the comic bit with him

Well darwves do seem like a more serious bunch don't they? But I think that might be the whole reason PJ put the comedy with who he did because it would be unlooked for in those charaterze(sp?). Although I can't really see him being able to put to much comedy in ROTK because it is full of tension; I mean can you really see the dead as they're following Aragorn weaving in and out sining a drinking song? That was kinda weak but it was the only thing I could think of off the top of my head.

I'm gonna regret getting in on this discussion, but I did not have a problem with Gimli being 'comic relief'. I also enjoy the privalage of keeping the movies seperate from the books Also, Shelob could be funny in RotK. Didn't Coney say she was Gollums Mother-in-law?

i think its great that gimli is funny. it just proves how funny (comic, not weird) short people can be! in Rotk there will probably be funny lines thrown in given to various characters. and you can't forget about gollum.

But Pippin did add some humor at the beginning of ROTK-and we're going to need some light to contrast with Frodo's odyssey.

well look at it this way people: would you rather have a funny dwarf (even if it does make you cringe after a while) or would you rather have Jackson insert a jar-jar character to keep the kiddies giggling? Give me the dwarf i say...

Or a movie which is actually true to the spirit of the book? (Eru forbid)

Gwaimir- do me a fovor- I want to try to prove a point.
Pick a book that has been made into a movie. And then look at how much it was changed to be turned into a movie. See? You can't possibly turn a movie into a carbon copy of the book it was based on. I think that we should give PJ credit for the amazing work he's done. And I mean- it could have been worse- PJ DID make just about the goriest zombie movie of all time. it takes an amazing person to direct both that type of thing and then later, Lord of the Rings- and get it so damn close to perfect- he's a great director- no doubt about it. -DoE |

I saw a movie adaptation of Shakespeare's 'Julius Caesar', which was very, very close to the original, maybe even identical. Also, The Princess Bride was also very, very true to the book. The Narnia movies, while not best quality special effects, were also very true to source material. It seems to me that it really matters whether or not the director really cares about preserving the book, or at least how much.
