real combat w/ arms and armor
My view of combat have been shaped by movies.
So i'm looking for some real fact about combat I AM NOT interested in fencing styles I'l talking about longswords, broadswords, scimatars, katana, kums, etc- in books and movies swords are passed down through generations but what about notching an breaking etc i hope this is clear but i'm too fatigued to think clearly

Well, unless I'm very wrong all that stuff about "passing my blade on to you now" *boy pulls big unmarked shiny sword out of sheath*
Do you know where wooden swords came from? they are called wasters because the knights didn't want to hurt their swords when they were practicing. You saw what sauron did to the blade when he stepped on it. Almost anyone in armor could easily do that and brake the blade just like he did. but in books the blades that get passed on are almost always magical, 99.9% they are some kind of unbreakable thing. well sorry if that sounded like a lecture, it was. j/k |

You have to post more to get it to change. Don't worry about it. I have an older brother who isn't so much into weapons. If I am lucky, I can get my dad to pass on his katana to me. It is a good weapon, but I prefer the staff myself. It doesn't work so well while an oponent is in armor, but luckily that doesn't seem to be a problem nowadays

Every year for my birthday and Christmas I would have "a sword" at the top of my list. I had info from a co. called Starfire that made "unusable" swords, but a real one would have been better. Finally, my grandparents gave me one that was passed to then from a great-aunt, but it is not really a real sword, I think it's a Civil War officers decorative sword.
Forget a gun for protection, I'd love to walk around with a sword. If a robber, cutthroat or highwayman came up to me I'd draw my blade! |

heeheehee...i fence, but i completely understand that this is NOT NOT NOT repeat NOT in any way, shape or form, related to that topic, so i will say that i like the way katanas look. and i don't really like short swords for no special reason, i just never really got to know one. *shrugs amicably*.

I have fenced and I still attack people with my zoink *winks at TinuvielChild* but I think I am more of an archer at heart. I made a bow out of a peice of PVC pipe and string which works surprisingly well, but I have no good arrows. In reality (such as it is) I really don't know too much about it. Good question Afro elf!

Real swords?
Mmmm, let's see *accesses hard disc in EƤrniel's mind* My, my what a load of junk in here, I should clear it out some day...Um never mind! Anyway, if I remember correctly real swords, the type they used in wars and such were rather heavy and needed a LOT of maintenance to keep them from rusting. They weren't often that sharp either. (That MUST have hurt ) They were often dented and (how do you say that the edge isn't smooth anymore) notched (?) Knights had squires to look after their swords because it took such a lot of time. I also seem to remember the swords used in battles were different from your every day sword: Longer, better maintenanced and heavier. You had to do a lot of swinging before you could do some damage, but when you did, you did some mayor damage. uck. This I know for a fact (yeay i'm actually SURE about something) swords at the time of King Arthur (5th century) were very rare and very expensive. A sword at that time was a heirloom to be kept in honour. And only a select group of people had them. Dunno if this is any useful to you....
