Paul also chose Germany over Uruguay!

Apparently poor Paul has received death threats in the likes of "we want Paul for the pan" and the Spanish Prime Minister said he considered "sending him a protective team"

Perhaps we should Pay Paul, the soothsaying Octopus To Rob Pete, the precognitive Kookaburra, of the honour of being correct.

Problem with this game is nobody to root against.
I've been a fan of Holland since the days of "total football" and it would be great to see them finally win, even if that style is long gone. OTOH Spain have been perennial underperformers, and are playing a nice style themselves. Maybe I can root for the Barca players and against the Real Madrid ones

In 1568 the Netherlands revolted from the clutches of Spain, and ushered into a Golden Age of prosperity The Spanish expanded their grasp over the Americas! Not so in Africa. In 1652 Van Riebeeck and a group of Dutch fellowmen landed on the southernmost tip of Africa. Hundreds of years later their descendants performed the Great Trek northwards to the plains of Transvaal and Gauteng, to find a better place to live. They established the Zuid-Afrikaansche Republiek, and chose as their capital Pretoria. A few kilometers away lay the mineral fountain of wealth for the Boer-nation: Johannesburg. In 2010 the Spanish once again descend on the Dutch and to rule the World (Cup) On the rainwashed, green-glittering pitch of Soccer City Stadium a battle of the titans. A battle between Spanish Conquestadores hell-bent on dribbling the circumference of the Earth before scoring against the 11 labouring and light-footed Dutchmen. The winner takes glory and gold. The loser a medal of bitterness and defeat. Who will win??? And so history repeats itself... ...In 2010 the Netherlands revolted from the clutches of Spain, and ushered into a Golden Age of prosperity... HUP HOLLAND HUP

Certainly no classic, but a deserved win by Spain- especially after Holland's brutal tactics. Any normal game they would have been playing from ten men early in the first half.

Poor Netherlands. Hard to come up with much when the opponent is determined to win several Oscars during the course of the match! And why would they ever choose the English referee. The man is synonymous for controversial decisions and yellow-card enthusiasm in the Premier League. Howard Webb should be kept far away from important games.
That's the history of mankind my friend!

Not too much of a shocker pick of course. Although I found most people shied away from them because of their cant-win-the-big-game rep.

Holland were a disgrace, so was the referee. It was total anarchy out there.
Interesting to see that the British press today make Howard Webb the focus of the discussion, not the World Cup final played by the footballers and teams that the entire world is interested in. Not only that, but they also praise him! Damn Jingoism. |

I quite liked Webb (yeah I watched, 't is a miracle). I think he was quite fair towards both sides and both sides had trouble playing a nice game. This was more like a match in gangfighting than soccer if you ask me and not just from the Dutch side.
Ah well, we're second and Spain deserved to win. Too bad the goal was such a controversial one. Actually, I don't get what the fuss is about. We got a cup, we got prize money and we got to play in the finals. The only thing we didn't get was a bonus for winning for the team

The goal was not controversial.

It was here
He was standing at the wrong spot and wasn't flagged. Then the second time he was standing correctly, but if he'd been flagged the first time, the goal wouldn't have been made.

NB: I know next to nothing about soccer, just repeating my cousins and driving instructor on the matter of that goal

That's not a particularly compelling argument for the goal being controversial. If it was, it should be in the news?
"Dutch defenders protested heavily that Iniesta was offside, earning Joris Mathijsen the Netherlands' ninth booking of the final. Replays showed Iniesta was onside when the pass was played." http://www.sbnation.com/2010/7/11/15...s-iniesta-goal

Is 'booking' receiving a yellow card? I'm not too familiar with soccerterms in English
And it WAS in the news here. As I said, here in Dutchland it was controversial, but people seem to have come to terms with it *shrugs* It was the 'talk of the town' though.

Well, ok that makes sense. Of course it was controversial for the dutch.
I WAS going to root for them since I'm 1/2 dutch, but they were so bad-tempered in both the semi and the final, I ended up rooting for Spain.
