O.o
Holy Shizzlefitz! My sweet little, 'cant sing to save her soul,' mother vocalized over three octaves tonight. Keep in mind that I was considered, a "kind of okay-ish" singer when I started lessons, and I only had about 2 octaves of vocalizing range. It took me a year of training to reach three octaves. She really got into it, too. I had her do some whacky stuff that I wasn't sure she'd be willing to do, but she did it, and it got some results. This is going to be VERY interesting to be a part of... I can't wait to see how the whole thing plays out. The slightly annoying thing is that since her vocalizing range IS so big, and her voice is still so breathy and unfocused over all of it, I have NO IDEA where her real voice is. She seems to have a somewhat strong chest voice, but then once I taught her how to access her head voice, she picked up some power there, too. Also she claimed to be comfortable singing low, and singing high. I have no clue what she is. But for right now I'm just going to take a wild stab and say possibly a lyric mezzo soprano, based on where she felt the vibrations (chest, throat, head) at various places in her range. Not that it matters, but I just personally am really curious. Also: IT IS UNCANNY HOW MUCH SHE SOUNDS LIKE ENYA. Omg. I thought she sounded like her before... but now she REALLY sounds like an 'untrained' Enya. o.O ... you do not know, 'weird,' till you are standing in front of your mother, bellowing, "YES! Good! Okay, up a half step... You dropped the support--breath into the stomach. Yes! Good! Okay, that was off... more support... yes... close, very close... YES! Great job!" I'm betting mezzo. Untrained natural altos head for an A like little homing pigeons, lol. And roost. They don't go 3 octaves.
How really fabulous! A great mother's day gift, Tessar, for her to be able to see your strengths in this area, and for you to help her.

Me9996? Why? Why have you bestowed upon me this thread slowing ray? I've accidentally shot it at no less than six boards, and with great effect it worked!

What voice do you sing? I'm guessing you must know, since you seem to know more about voice than I do . ... re-reading that sentence, now... this comes to mind: "And here we have a lovely soprano, who... OH! Look over there! It's the rare, fabulous, Untrained Alto! Cricky, it's a big one, too! Look at the jaws on that gurl! Oop! We've startled 'er, an' she's retreating to the A... her safety point. Cricky, that was exciting, though!" My mother actually sang from the C below Middle C, up to the A below Soprano C. So yes, just a tiny bit under three octaves, but damn close. In the American keyboard system, it would be from C3 to A5, for those of you who know it. So that range, coupled with the places she seemed to have her 'breaks' at, makes me think Mezzo. I'm glad you agree with me! Like I said, this is going to be interesting. Once I've trained her for a bit, I think I'll make a bigger push for her to go see a real voice teacher. It seems that she may have a fair bit of talent in there that just needs some bringing out. Quote:
This is very exciting for me, and she definitely seems to have an untapped gift for it. |

I used to be first soprano before my testicles dropped.
I'm second soprano now. They get cooler harmonies. |

same here, I used to be a fairly high soprano, but I now sing mezzo/alto. It kind off depends on what is necessary at the moment, since I can sing both without much problems.
I am now practicing a song from the sound of music, which is interestingly arranged, but it's also a bit weird: the alto part goes from a low A# to a high D... and not gradually, but with big jumps. A challenge! I wish I had someone to teach me how to sing properly though.
