Gandalf is a Maia; a being of spirit, one of the Ainur, rather like an Angel. Hairy Potter is a little boy.
Wands are silly little sparkle-things; it is in a staff where true power resides. Gandalf has been in Middle-Earth for 2000 years, let alone the fact that he's been in the Blessed Land since pre-First Age, I expect. FAR more wisdom than a little (13? 14?) year old boy. He is wiser, more magical (in that he is a supernatural being), stronger, more goodly, and more wizardly. Gandalf is by an enormous amount superior to Harry Potter. The difference is similar to Who knows more about mathematics? Einstein or a 2-year old. j/k of course, but it's really not much of a contest.

Isn't it obvious?
Harry is a tragic little hero. He has Hermione to do his magic for him and Ron to provide comic relief. Harry himself runs fast and ducks punches. How wonderful. Gandalf is clearly more wizard-like. You can even argue that he would be more wizard-like in a HP-world. He's a lot like Dumbledore in that sense. Besides that, Harry is not a fully grown wizard. He's just a little shrimp with a stick. I have a feeling those HP supporters are coming to get me!

A real wizard is not concerned with "fan mail". Shame.

I think Gandalf is many times more powerful and knowledgeable than Harry Potter but I would say that HP will win on a technicality. He always does and after a while it gets old.

I believe this discussion is really stupid and mindless. So naturally I have to post in it!
I think HP could have won...If Gandalf was bound, cut up in pieces, blinded, relieved from his magic and had a really bad day. Then HP would have a small chance to beat Gandalf. If HP got lucky, that is.

Even though I have been switching sides alot, I think that there is no doubt in all lotr and HP fans that Gandalf could kick Harry's butt. I am really exited for 5th HP book!

Gandalf is a supernatural being: so are Balrogs. Harry Potter is a mere human, as, I believe, is Voldefart. (sorry, just slipped out).
And Gandalf has, no doubt, been around since the world was shaped; he's been in Middle-Earth proper (Excluding Aman) for around 2000 years; He has GREAT wisdom, GREAT power, a GREAT sword, and a talent for mopping up little wannabe wizards.

I don't know. Gandalf is, of course, the Wizard of Wizards, but Harry's pretty cool too. If anyone were competition for Gandalf, it would be Hermione!!

And in my opinion, Harry can only be credited with one defeat of Voldemort. As a baby, he didn't do anything, and so I can't include it. In the first book, Dumbledore ultimitely comes to save the day. In the second book, I'll admit it, he does defeat V. In book three, V. doesn't come into it much. In book four, Harry helps V. regain his powers. Not such a great record, is it?
