Michael Phelps won his first race, the 400 IM, with a new world record... and well ahead of the field. Phenomenal swim!
Ian Thorpe also won his first race, the 400 free, but it was a good deal closer. I only saw tonight about how he had false started and been disqualified at the Aussie trials - but that one of the guys who got a spot gave it to him. What do you Aussies think... did he fall in on purpose at your trials? Is he getting tired of having to meet all the high expectations all the time? I had wanted to stay up and watch tonight's women's swim events too, but had to settle the kids into bed. I saw the women's 100 fly semi-finals though. The one girl from The Netherlands (de Bruijen?) has a nice stroke... looks like a good bet to repeat from Sydney and win it again tomorrow night. Oh - Earniel, I missed the Belgian team in the Opening Ceremonies (and with the Greek alphabetical order, I never knew when to watch for what team! ). How many athletes do they have? What are some of their strong events? Others besides Americans... who are some of your top Olympic athletes and what events do they do... or what Olympic events are a real source of national pride in your country (we Americans are pretty diverse, so we spread out and try to do everything. )? Anyone... which event(s) do you most look forward to watching?

The Spanish team is one of the biggest: more than 300 attletes, but more than 300 of them are mere losers . You see, we enjoy competition
I'm looking forward to basketball. I don't think we can compete with USA, but we're dreaming with a medal. we have also some chances in other sports.

i just finished watching the first session of dressage riding; everyone rode pretty well, but the first US rider was a little rough around the edges. the second rider from the US was awesome though!
i also watched some of the iraq/costa rico soccer match that was cool to. i'm looking forward to the gymnastics, swimming, and especially the shooting

3 for 24 from three??? Im thoroughly disgusted right now. They were simply crushed by a team that isnt even supposed to contend for a metal. This is unprecedented. They couldn’t put the freaking ball in the ocean. And they were so sloppy they don’t know how to play like a team yet. This could be a rough Olympics for the US unless they come together as a team and really get their act together.

You already competed in the thread merging event... are you competing with SGH and the non-inflated stick of wrath? I read an article in the Globe and Mail that the Canadian athletes that have had the honour of carrying the flag at the opening ceremonies have done poorly in their events. The Ceremonies themselves are so long, it must be tiring for all the athletes involved. Do you think organizers should tone down the opening ceremonies? I think wearing out the athletes before hand detracts from what should be the real focus of the Olympics - world class sporting events. What do you think guys? I think it's the excellent judo guy (who's name escapes me at the moment) who's carrying the flag for Canada. Can anyone confirm? I hope he does well.

Our little (and only) gymnast qualified herself for the final! The first Belgian to do so on the Olympics ever! Go Aagje!

One of our best medal hopes, Susanna Ljungskog, ended up 33rd in the women's cycling road race . Guess it wasn't her day... Australian Sara Carrigan won the gold instead.
I was positive that Inge de Bruijn would win the gold in the women's 100m buttefly. She was in the lead for most of the race but finished 3rd, beaten by Aussie Petria Thomas and Polish Otylia Jedrezejcak. I've never seen a Pole win a medal in swimming before, so that was fun. And tomorrow is the men's 200m freestyle finals. Pieter van den Hoogenband will most likely win the bronze. I dare not pick a winner though, but good luck to all you fans of Thorpe and Phelps And the Swedish swimmers continue to swim badly. I'm afraid we're not going to win a medal at all [update] Great, now our best tennis player is gone as well. Possible back injury. Sweden's medal hopes are diminishing rapidly Quote:
Is there anyone else but me who thinks the official Olympics website sucks?
