I think I may need a new mattress after 12 years. My back hurts.

Aww. Sorry.
But yeah.. 12 years is pretty old for a mattress. I know a lot of people keep them much, much longer than that, but think about it.... it's a bunch of springs. Those suckers wear out. >.> |

I know. I love this one though. I like mattresses that are only slightly softer than a brick, which is not very common. I remember from last time that it was very difficult finding a good mattress. I hate shopping.

What is the world coming to ...
I just saw a major grammatical error in a tv ad for a major corporation - usually, they're very good, but Chevy actually used "it's" for a possessive in huge letters Sorry, fellow grammar nazis! I feel your pain!

I've been noticing more and more spelling/grammar errors in places I wouldn't expect lately. Hopefully, I just didn't notice them before . . .

OH.
OH. Speaking of grammatical errors... I tend to be extremely forgiving of those kinds of things, just because.... well we all know my history, and Lord knows I make mistakes aplenty these days.... but the other day a guy I haven't seen in a couple of years showed up to sing with the choir I sing with, and he asked me a question about something. I explained to him how it worked, and he litterally said: "Oh, yeah, I didn't know if that's how they still did it. I haven't came to sung here in a while." My brain was like: I didn't say anything, but it didn't surprise me later when I found out that this kid has been looking for a job for about six months now and apparently after one interview he never gets a call back. Color me not surprised... I feel bad for him. The crazy thing? His dad, whom I know and get along with really well, is the head of the English department at a prestigious high school. Crazy!!! |

'literally' - one 't'.
But I know you were just testing me.

I don't let them bother me too much, either. But when you see them in newspapers, in scholarly works, on academic websites, on the websites of major international groups . . . you start to wonder.

I'm a spelling nazi... in two languages. *is slightly embarrassed to admit it* Though I may pounce on any mistake made in any language.
Fortunately for my students I also have a lot of fun trying to guess which word on earth they could have meant and I don't deduct points for amusing me. Well, not as much as I should.

Capital "N"?
Vent: This year really got off to a flying start. Caught a really bad cold on New Year's Day. And late on the same day, I was on the phone with my brother to discuss my impending move from Stockholm, which he was going to help me with. It unexpectedly turned out that the only possible day for us to load a van with furniture, was the very next morning. I had to pack like crazy till 3 am But then, there's the anti-vent: All things are now in place in the new flat . I'll stay at my mother's in Stockholm for a while before I move into my new home.

No, I do believe that in that combination it's not with a capital since it's not used as a personal pronoun. Though I'm not entirely sure.

Capital "N" or no, I don't think the word Nazi has ever been used as a personal pronoun. I mean c'mon:
I you he she Nazi we you they Sorry for poking fun at you. This would have been more fun though if you were a self-recognized grammar Nazi rather than a spelling Nazi. But perhaps you are both...

I'm frustrated with a casting director. Again.
I'm disappointed, but not surprised. This is the same director who kept (and is still) passing me over for (paid!) chorus parts with the local opera company in favor of guys who kept bailing out on him and that he knew were lying to him about things. Come on. I know I'm not incredibly good looking, I don't have an amazing voice, and I'm not a young super talent like those guys but seriously. I'm freaking reliable!!! These guys are always showing up late, exhausted from partying the night before, etc.... I must be doing something seriously wrong. I don't get why I keep getting passed over, and I'm not dumb enough to assume that it "couldn't possibly be me!" I have to figure out what it is that's keeping me from getting roles. The only thing I can think of is that the other guys are certainly better looking and better singers than I am. I'm not being hard on myself, it's just the truth. But I've always believed that being reliable was more important than those things, so long as you were sufficiently talented to get the job done. I don't get it. |
