Actually that raises something that always bothered me about Gollum / Smeagol.

The fact that the ring took such a strong hold so quickly is totally at odds with the way that over the next 500 years he was strong willed enough to resist it's all consuming power to show glimpses of niceness when he is with Frodo.

If the ring had this much immediate hold over one who resisted it for so long, then surely 'weaker' characters such as Boromir would have gone for murder almost immediately also?

Bit inconsistent.

Yeah, the Ring's power does seem to 'fluctuate' a bit. But it's a lot of work for one lonely ring. It can't REALLY hope to rule them all . . .

I disagree that Boromir was weak, I think it was his pride that made him susceptible to the ring.

Agreed that Boromir was not weak. The Ring worked on his strong emotions, such as loyalty, sense of responsibility, etc.

Boromir's "weakness" was his love for his people, and his country, and a deep sense of responsibility based upon his being the heir to the Stewardship of Gondor. The Ring used that inroad to call to him, and being so worried about the survival of his nation, he saw it as a possible "savior" of his harried and distressed people.

"...[The Lord of the Rings] is to exemplify most clearly a recurrent theme: the place in 'world politics' of the unforeseen and unforeseeable acts of will, and deeds of virtue of the apparently small, ungreat, fogotten in the places of the Wise and Great (good as well as evil). A moral of the whole (after the primary symbolism of the Ring, as the will to mere power, seeking to make itself objective by physical force and mechanism, and so also inevitably by lies) is the obvious one that without the high and noble the simple and vulgar is utterly mean; and without the simple and ordinary the noble and heroic is meaningless." Boromir, I find, had too much strength. And strength, will, ambition... those are what the Ring corrupts. Frodo and Gollum didn't resist the Ring, so much as it corrupted them very, very slowly, due to their weakness compared to the traditional strong, heroic, grandiose characters on either end of the spectrum - for example, Gandalf, Boromir, Aragorn, Sauron, and especially Saruman.

That's almost the whole point of the novel. Why do you think Frodo was the Ringbearer?
