They shared a woman like papadams and mango chutney: nibbles pinched off the buffet line in blindfold games of keep-away, no attention granted to the intervalic pickings of the stranger on the other side until he took too much. They shared a country like a broken wishbone, split between the best of squabbling friends and the earnest tugs of their inglorious, bloodied chessmen. When shock went home to rest and numbness seized the night shift in its place, it occurred to him that it must have been the same with his mother, their mother, the mother they unwillingly shared.
