Bilbo's Party Guests

I was reading through the Appendixes, and I noticed that Sam and the Gaffer weren't invited to Bilbo's Party. What's up with that?

Welcome Rosie

I'm not sure about the Gaffer but probably Sam was there as a part of the household since he was also their gardenner. Just speculating...

In the appendixes, under the family trees, it says the guests at Bilbo's party are underlined. Sam and the Gaffer weren't invited. Poor them.

I find that so odd! It hardly makes sense, perhaps as Arathorn suggested they were part of the 'staff' instead....

I guess like most other people, I've always just assumed that Sam and the Gaffer were invited to the party.

It would be VERY odd if they weren't. After all they were good friends of Bilbo and Frodo.

Anyway, I would have thought that their names would appear above the Sacksville-Baggins's on the invitation list!!

Gollum

Perhaps Bilbo knew they would turn up with or without invitation.

Check the Appendixes after ROTK. In the family tree section, people who were at the party were underlined. No one in Sam's family was invited. I found that sort of disturbing. You don't think it was because Sam's family were sort of like servants do you
*Getting angry!*

It might have been a printing mistake since there arn't any indicated on that page. I think it's safe to assume that they were members of the household, though, and while they might not have gotten a proper invitation, i think they were definitly there. I wonder if Farmer Cotton (and his sons & daughter) were invited, it doesn't say that they were...

Yeah. I think that they were considered family and needn't an invitation.
