Gwaihil the Windlord...
During Gandalf's 'imprisonment' in Orthanc, he is saved by an eagle called Gwaihil the Windlord. The text runs something like this:- 'Gandalf! Forever doomed I am to carry you as a burden!'
This implies that he's carried Gandalf before. I was just wondering is this the same eagle that saved Gandalf, Thorin and Company from the incident with the Wargs in The Hobbit?

Gwahir the Windlord (it's r, not l) was indeed same Lord of Eagles, who appeared in Hobbit. And yes, he has carried Gandalf before. I guess, that he has carried him many times not mentioned anywhere.
In Silmarillion, there are Eagles of Manwë, whose descendants the Great Eagles seem to be. |

It does indeed say that he shall have carried gandalf thrice at Mt Doom...
He carried him from Orthanc, then he carried him to lothlorien after the battle with the Balrog, then he carried him to Mordor to find frodo. I dont think he carried Gandalf in the hobbit - he was the king and he sent his 15 chieftans to carry gandalf, bilbo and the 13 dwarves.... Correct me if I'm wrong

Seems like he was carrying that wizard around quite often. Lucky for Gandalf that Gwaihir didn't charge him for all that transporting!
