Scrambled words puzzle game
If permitted by moderators, if there's interest in it, and if it isn't too easy, how about a game based on one in many daily newspapers, scrambled letters that when sorted out make real words?
Suggested rules, subject to any practicable changes) could be: 1) Puzzle should generally be of one sentence (some flexibility may be needed to make coherent and/or interesting excerpts). 2) Punctuation should be kept as is in solved puzzle, example: nimn," dsia ouy bBoil. "veerN is solved as "Never you mind," said Bilbo. "Never you mind," said Bilbo. 3) Capital letters are kept as in solved puzzle. 4) Confirmed solver posts new puzzle. To begin, how about this: illts meac asyd cuhs eerw yb lodwr? ni het owh tuB eht htta esga nehw ni llGmou dlo sonwk woh garel ta nrspeet, oag irgsn

This seems fun, and harder than the quote game, I think.

nrspeet, ________________________________ All the words but one are correct. There are several clues to word order, the words in Capitals and punctuation marks: But and world? (plus, of course, any proper names). ============================ P. S. This is just an experiment. If just scrambled words are preferred (say three or four related proper words, that's fine). In sentences, a fairly meaningful one, as the above one is, might also be better then a generalized sentence, although easier to solve, and sentences with quotation marks would also give additional clues.

Is that other word 'present'?
This game does seem quite hard. After we solve this first one, should we keep phrases to a limit of maybe 10 or 12 words - at least at first while we're trying to get good at the game? Then maybe later we'll be able to tackle longer ones. |

Yes, it's present.
Good idea about length. Of course, the first word in this sentence is "But" ========================= P. S. Think it would it be too confusing to give the solver the option of either posting a scrambled sentence or four scrambled related words (say, names of elves)?

Yes, 'present was much better than 'serpent'.
What about this: "But who knows how Gollum came by that present, ..... in the world?"

Yes, Artanis solved it.
"But who knows how Gollum came by that present, ages ago in the old days when such rings were still at large in the world?" Should the next puzzle be only a scrambled sentence (with relevant capital letters and punctuation) or have as an alternative four or so related scrambled words? I'm okay with either, whatever the concensus is.

Okay. Scrambling words and a sentence are difficult. How about (while still keeping the general theme of the thread) trying to unscramble four related words. But if successful, this might be better in Book or Middle Earth areas, since there aren't as many proper names available in The Hobbit. In the one below, for example, some aren't. Also, so it's not too easy, all letters of the individuals are in capitals. How are they related?

Correct. Care to try making one? If UT, Silmarillion, LOTR are included it might be a challenge, epecially if the scrambled words are related in some way.
(Although then it wouldn't be really in The Hobbit Section).

Maybe let's try sticking to your original idea in this thread, but initially keeping the phrases limited to about 10, 12 or 15 words. Sound OK? Shall Artanis post one... if she's willing?

That works for me. Artanis, or if not, anyone else who's interested.

So far below are done, but of course not all in order, actually I'm not especially good at unscrambling words, only at scrambling them. Like Benjamin Franklin Pierce said about pain on M*A*S*H*: "I can't take pain, I can only infict it."
