Just to clear up a misconception of Pippin's character someone mentioned above. He did actively seek to help Frodo. In fact, Sam was spying and reporting to Frodo's friends (Merry, Pippin, and Faatty) before Gandalf put a stop to it. Merry does indeed say "You can trust us to stick to you through thick and thin - to the bitter end." and (months) after the council of Elrond we get this convo:

Elrond: I judge the younger of these two, Peregrin Took, should remain. My heart is against his going.
Pippin: Then, master Elrond, you will have to lock me in a prison, or send me home tied in a sack.

The only one I had, other asked too. Will his character develop? But I just remembered another one. Hobbits kiss each other a lot. Did he have to overcome any insecurities to do that?
