Gandalf and Moria
I am reading Unfinished Tales, specifically the chapter on the Istari. They showed up in Middle-earth ~ year 1000 of the Third age (TA). It says that not much was recorded about Gandalf in the second millenium of the TA. Moria was destroyed in ~1980 of the TA.
I always thought that Gandalf had been through Moria in its heyday, because of what he says in the FotR at the 3 exits - 'I have no memory of this'. I thought he was perplexed that he couldn't remember the way out. Could someone clear this up for me? As well, did the balrog destroy Moria along with the goblins, or where there separate battles?
