The Silmarillion is indeed rife with fanfic-opportunity, moreso than The Hobbit or LoTR in that respect. The only downside is that you have to remember a lot of history if you want to play in that sandbox. I've never have spent as much time in the timelines for discussion than I did for fanfic and RPG-reasons.
