Encourage him to go back and ask when he's not sure how to do things. That's a good way of learning his job - when he knows what to ask for, he's already learnt some of it, and then to be explained the details he's missing, fills in the holes nicely. And during the first few days (or even weeks) at work, his colleagues should expect a few questions.

I've actually been praised by my previous boss for asking rather than guessing. She mentioned it in her speech at the farewell party on my last day of work, nine years ago. When I had started doing something and realised I wasn't sure what we had agreed on or how I'd been told to do it, I would come back and ask. She had noticed, and she thought it was a good thing.
