Which LOTR edition is better?

I own some crappy LOTR books(i.e. torn up, ripped, etc etc). So I decided to go on a shopping spree and I've been wondering...which edition of LOTR is best for collection purposes? The 3-book version or the single book one? And, while I'm at it, which versions of the Hobbit and Silmarillion should I buy? Give me the best options, please.
