In my experience, people are jealous because they are insecure. They also don't like "losing" something, particularly a friend or partner, to another person. It makes them feel less important.

It is very rare to find a person who is so secure and unselfish that they can give you up so that you can be happy.

However, most people are able to deal with it. Some can't, and some of them can get nasty. Best confronted head on I think, and, also in my experience, "giving in" to it just leads to bigger problems later on.
