Sounds like spyware. Download Ad Aware and Spy Bot and run them regularly. Also, a firewall is pretty much mandatory for the internet these days. I use both XP's built in firewall and Norton Internet Security. That is your first line of defense. Antivirus and anti-spyware applications are secondary tools.
