Amazing that this thread is still going at this late date.
For me, in the end, it comes down to this: The world is a mirror. Yes, it's possible to view Gandalf as a cunning manipulator and the hobbits as his expendable baggage. It's also possible to see Gandalf as an immortal demigod who selflessly assumed the pains and aches of mortal flesh to teach, lead, and save, someone to whom friendship is a high value indeed worthy of faith and trust.
