Lord Elronds Mistake

Something occured to me when I was watching the New LIne version: Lord Elrond does his shpeal about how he was there when men failed and they showed him and Isildur in the Chasm at Orodruin and he tells the king
" Cast it in the fire" and Isildur shakes his head, " No" and he takes the ring for himself. It occured to me that Elrond failed all of the Last Alliance by letting him just walk out of there. Why didnt he just waste the bastard right there and then? He could of fired an arrow into his back and kicked the ring into the fires and be done with the whole third age. Of course this is not how Mr Tolkien meant the story to go, but everytime I see that part where he criticises the hearts of men I keep thinking he was a bit faint of heart himself ionthta moment for not wasting the greedy bastard. Comments, anyone?
