Why Books are Better than Drugs
A list I compiled for my web page Fool of a Took.com. I actually ripped the things of other pages...
You can get books in clean & well lit places called "libraries" or audio-video centers" (free) or "bookstores" (paying). No one has ever been hospitalized for having read too much. Books permit you to live in other realities & visit other worlds & return without damage. No one has ever jumped from the roof of a building because of having read too many books. You don't have to flush your books down the toilet if the police come to your door. It is extremely rare that someone gets themselves beaten up because of an argument about a book. Your friends won't drop you when you are out of books. Dogs don't rummage through your bags at the airport to find books. You can exhibit your books with pride on the coffee table. You can't catch aids, hepatitis or cirrhosis of the liver from a book. You can read as much as you want; it never shows up in urine tests. No matter how many books you have, you can't be accused of "intent to resell" and even if you can, that's legal too. You don't have to ask yourself what the secondary effects will be when you mix two or more books. It is still more interesting to read stories about trials & hospitals than to find yourself in them. When you enlarge your spirit with books, it stays enlarged. If you sneeze, you won't scatter your books on the floor. Books don't make your nose run. If you don't read for one day, you won't suffer withdrawal symptoms. Two days, maybe. You can read on the Metro or other public places. You can share books safely with friends and relatives. The President of the United States hasn't declared a "war on books" (yet, anyway). Not one person has been subjected to a body-cavity search for smuggling books across the border. There are places in every city where you can get your book fix for free. Books are non-carcinogenic. When your parents come over to visit, you don't have to worry about them recognizing the reading paraphernalia on your coffee table. When you're pulled over for a traffic violation, you don't have to quickly hide the books lying on your back seat. |
