I didn't get what you did after expanding the log. If you take that "divide by (1-x)" is equivalent to "multiply by (1-x)^-1" Then the expansion works:

(x - 1/2x^2 + 1/3x^3 + ...)/(1-x)
=(x - 1/2x^2 + 1/3x^3 + ...) * (1 + x + x^2 + x^3 + ...)
= x + x^2 + x^3 - 1/2x^2 -1/2x^3 + 1/3x^3
= x + 1/2x^2 + 5/6x^3

And there's your answer.
