Bombadil's existence DENIED by the movie

Actually that raises something that always bothered me about Gollum / Smeagol.

The fact that the ring took such a strong hold so quickly is totally at odds with the way that over the next 500 years he was strong willed enough to resist it's all consuming power to show glimpses of niceness when he is with Frodo.

If the ring had this much immediate hold over one who resisted it for so long, then surely 'weaker' characters such as Boromir would have gone for murder almost immediately also?

Bit inconsistent.
