Used book store find
I recently found a book by Lin Carter called 'Tolkien: A Look Behind The Lord of the Rings'. This guy is amazing! He is a word slueth. In his words he 'enjoys discovering wonder in old, old books nobody else bothers to read anymore.'
Anyway during one of his hunts for the origin of Tolkien's words he came upon an anchient text called 'The Elder Edda'. From this book came the names of 16 dwarves and the name of Gandalf! Here are some quotes from Lin Carter's book, from the Edda - Gunnar, no joy the gold shall give thee, The rings shall soon thy slayers be. And could he discover the Ring, It would make him the lord of the world! Also in one of the stanzas a dwarf is namd Eikinskjaldi, which is old Norse for 'Oaken shield' Pretty cool, eh? If you can find Carter's book, I highly recomend it! |
