It probably doesn't help, but elevators are the safest form of transport (in terms of number of deaths per passenger journey). I used to be scared of them, probably after seeing The Omen II at too young an age; I can't remember when but suddenly one day I liked them. Probably when faced with the choice of walking up 13 floors..

I used to love flying, but as I get older I'm getting more nervous again. I still love it if I can see out the window, but need bicycle clips on my trousers if I can't and we're landing in a cross-wind. Funnily enough, earlier on this year my plane struck by lightning. Since then, I've been less afraid of flying. Weird.

Fear is the worst thing in itself. It makes us do irrational and dangerous things, like drive our kids to school, when it would be safer for them to walk, and buy guns for defence, which are more likely to kill you accidentally than an intruder. If you can recognise the difference between feeling fearful (and forgiving yourself for it) and the thing you're afraid of, you're halfway to conquering it.
