Today's nations in LOTR
I see gondor as the great britian.
The last remains of a great empire Great warriors and cultured ( at least that's the image) Arnor Canada cold few people once apart of the empire Rohan America Cowboys who can fight rivendell switzerland everyone goes there for meetings lindon scandinavia they make good ships but are not really part of the world scence the lonely mountian germany great engineers and warlike can't think the others at the moment

Re: Today's nations in LOTR
Gondor = England
Arnor = Scotland Rohan = Vikings on horseback Rivendell = Wales Lindon = The shores of Great Britian Lonely Mountian = Girbralter These are my lame guesses. Laugh at them if you will.

Regarding my choices:
Lindon - Scandinavia Eriador - Canada The Shire - England Rohan - Germany Gondor - America Harad - Middle East I chose these not so much by the inhabitants, but more by geography and climate. One can argue thast the inhabitants evolve societies dictated by the physical constraints of their environment. I am reminded of the Brits when I read about Hobbits , but the other races of Middle-earth don't bring to mind any one distinct present day society. I might amend my list by saying that I don't known much about the climate and geography of Harad, so it may equally be suited to the mediterranean races.

Mordor- I would say Afganistan, but to avoid someone saying "That's mean" I will say the Taliban even though that's not a nation
Gondor- USA Rohan- Canada (If Gondor is USA, then Rohan would have to be a nearby friendly nation) The Shire- England's great for the Shire That's all I can think of.

Well, I suppose you could say that Afghanistan is Mordor, not that I would agree, but because there were a lot of slaves in Mordor who probably did not want to be there. But I really can't talk about this subject without getting into a really wierd discussion in which I contradict myself about twenty times, so I guess I'll end this post now.

I actually think Mordor is the United States of America. It's big, it's got a huge military, it pollutes a lot, and it corrupts the rest of the world with its materialistic and commercial culture. It is also the paragon of greedy capitalist exploitation of the less fortunate and impoverished peoples of the world. Hah! I bet the Americans even think they invented hockey and donuts and maple syrup! American donuts are but mockeries, as Trolls are of Ents and Orcs of Elves... By the way, I'm only partly serious.

The parallel is interesting. Is the ring of power, made of gold, symbolize corrupt greed and lust for ultimate power and control that lures the weak of character? Sauron's power to control originated through intimidation He holds in contempt all that is not within his control or of his making. The only country that has ever used nuclear weapons and actually is now contemplating using them "tactically" is the U.S.
The real truth is that no nation of peoples is evil or good. It is the government that they allow themselves to be controlled by. Wars would end if individuals didn't allow theemselves to be used to kill total strangers that may or may not have wronged someone in their country. Most armies are made up of conscripts. Free you mind anf the world will follow

I've only been to Toronto. I know unlike Americans, MOST Canadians don't cross against the signal. The food was evil, though

I agree with IronParrot: Mordor could very well be America.
