Festivus

Perhaps we can have a mildly jovial discussion on this anti-holiday. It would also be welcomed to comment upon the 'creeping' holiday factor; i.e. Christmas stuff appears in stores before Halloween, etc.

If we can keep it light, non-religious and non-judgemental, we might just have a topic that doesn't raise anyones blood pressure.

Funny but true, someone has written a book on this.

It won't be very non-judgemental when we get to the Airing of Grievances...

well, i love christmas ... the actual christmas bit ... christmas eve through the 12 days and new years etc rather than the commercialisation side of it ...

actually Spock i was thinking the same as i saw the christmas lights being put up all around the jewellery quarter a few days ago ...

regarding halloween , a mainly american thing .. that has noticeably been commercialised and americanised over here the last 5 years or so ...

though i always used to enjoy bonfire night very much .. though i have kinda not really been to one for some years now...

my mum is having an op soon and will not be very mobile for 6-9 weeks, so we should have all the family together this year, which will be great ... especially having my god daughter and neices for christmas ... makes everyone remember the childish joys don't it?

guess we'll have the old goose v turkey debate with usual odd untraditional suggestions thrown in .... and i shall have my traditional late christmas eve dash to get presents! ... chaos is a great present finder i find ... best NOT to think about it and just have things leap out at you .... subsequently i give some of the best and worse presents going! ... still at least people look forward to my presents out of sheer curiousity ...

what are some of your family traditions?

is it de-riguer that there is a satsuma at the very bottom of the stocking?, and a miniture bottle of spirit: brandy, contreau, whiskey etc ...?

Indeed! That's the best part. No laws, each family conducts the airing of grievances according to their own experience.

Now where did I see an aluminum pole for sale?

I must say we're together on this, I love the English traditions concerning this holiday.

Yikes, over there too? Wow, I too thought it mainly an American thing.

I'd love to attend such an event. One such is:
Samhuinn Fire Festival
Monday 31st October - 9pm Starting at the Castle and processing to Parliament Square - followed by the Samhuinn Club Night at Cabaret Voltaire til 3am! in Edinburgh. But I'd gladly attend one on the Sailsbury Plain.

I noticed this year, the stores here have turkey and goose. This region was settled by Celts so perhaps that's why they have it. I don't remember seeing any in past years but perhaps they were all bought up by the time I started looking.

The ancient Japanese province of Satsuma was in the southern most part of the island of Kyushu. Its association with the production of pottery and earthenware was well known by the early 17th century. Most people now a days associate Satsuma with the tangerine like fruit which in Japan and China is known as the satsuma mandarin. Some families with older relatives still living practice this tradition for the children. Suntory Whiskey or brandy is also a favorite of younger families, put in the adult stockings. *of course we're speaking of Christian Japanese*

Are you volunteering to do one of the Feats of Strength?

I'm put in a holiday mood because the clocks go back tonight, and that means it's winter and nearly Christmas. I like Christmas so much that I like it to extend as long as possible - pretty much the whole of Michaelmas Term (October-November) I'm thinking about Christmas shopping, because it reminds me of home, and then Christmas begins when I go home at the beginning of December. Not that we have any Christmas celebrations until the actual day, but the happy expectant feeling of Advent lasts all month. It's a great holiday for religious and emotional reasons.

I'm not a big fan of Halloween, but I like Guy Fawkes Night/Bonfire Night, though I haven't been to any events in a while. Maybe I'll go to a firework display this year - they've started already!

It's horrible, isn't it BoP? Here at Thomas Aquinas College they have Christmas lights up today; however, they are just using as lighting for the Halloween dance tonight.

I'm glad to say I haven't seen any Christmas decorations yet. But then they take care not do so over much before Sint-Niklaas (6th december) which is also a day for gifts around here, but only for the children.

And Halloween is picking up popularity here so all the shops are still all in 'scary' mode and haven't got time to get all christmassy yet.

Don't get me wrong, both Halloween and Sint-Niklaas are also rather commercialised. Sickingly so at some points but they do effectively delay the Christmas commercialisation.

Well cookies I can bake, thanks to Pilsbury sugar cookies. I love 'em.

For Festivus, I volunteer for 'the airing of grievences' and as an alternate for the 'feats of strength'. I think there are one or two others who are better qualified for that one.

GW! What made you remember old Entmoot so suddenly? I haven't seen you online since about two months after I registered.

I've never celebrated Festivus, but I loved the Seinfeld episode. And what is Bonfire Night? (Was it ever in a Harvest Moon game?)

Commericialism doesn't bother me so much. I don't know why the Christmas season makes everyone suddenly aware of and bitter to the fact that it's just how the world works now, and that's no problem.

In fact it's the 400th anniversary of the Gunpowder Plot this year, which is pretty cool

No, NO, much too political-the bonfires are for the Druid or Wiccan celebrations of Samhuinn a.k.a. Samhain

I can't believe I've never heard of that before. At first I thought it must be some sort of alternative way to celebrate Halloween. But it sounds like you had a lot of fun.

Also, there were about 19 different Harvest Moon games made, the best ones for Super Nintendo and N64, but they're all essentially the same. You're a rancher who inherits a farm and has three years to work it into good condition. You can communicate with villagers and attend lots of festivals, including at least one that involves a gigantic bonfire.

The origin of lighting bonfires is certainly pagan, but Bonfire Night is the only real bonfire occasion of the British year, and the date is definitely the anniversary of the failed Gunpowder Plot.

Rityo Janny, I just wanted her to know of the pagan ceremonies as that's what I had in mind. Thanks for the input.

I think Bombadillo was asking about Bonfire Night because BB and I both mentioned it as a holiday we liked. It's really not a political occasion.
