Life span of the Dunedain
We know the line of Elros was long lived.
But i'm confused concerning the other dunedain. Did they have greater lifespans also? the edain gained another 20 years to their life span when they entered beleraind. ( even MM doesn't you why ) Hmmm. maybe the mouth of sauron did extended his life a little bit anyway did the other dunedain have longer life spans also?

All of them have much longer lives than "lesser men".

Well, I think Aragorn did live to something like 200, but if I remember correcty that is still a bit long for even the Dunedain. I don't really know, eh?

In their begining (when they came to Numenore) a life span of 3 times that of normal man was granted to the Dunedain and to the house of Elros 5 times that of normal men. Tolkien counted the normale span as 70 jears. So the Dunedain had a life span of 210 jears. But the time dwindled during the jears of thier rebellion and exile.
Respectfully Findegil Sorry, did a typingerror up their. The house of Elros lived of course langern than the normal Nomenorians. Last edited by Findegil : 08-08-2002 at 07:42 AM. |

amm... the other Numinorians lived so long as elros and his sons? i think not (read UT). just elros's sons lived as long as he lived, until the end of numinore, and then they still lived more then an average person.

Life-span of the Dunedain
Yes, they lived longer, but their life-span dwindled as they mingled with lesser Men.

But I thought what made them the Dunedain is the fact that they were of the Numenorean bloodline... if so, then they would all have that increased life span. That's how I've always seen it.

UT has a short chapter telling about the line of Elros: Elros lived for 500 years, he was Earendil's son so he was given the longest life of any Man. His descendants were given shorter life spans, but still the first generations of Numenorean kings lived more than 400 years. Following the traditions they yielded the sceptre to their successor some years before they died, and they laid themselves down to die while their mind were still strong.
The other Numenoreans lived thrice as long as Men in ME. When Shadow fell on Numenor the kings became greedy for wealth and power and began to fear death. They clinged on to life and refused to pass the sceptre on to the next generation as the tradition said. They turned away from the Valar and gave up their friendship with the Eldar, whom they envied. Thus their lives waned and their lives shortened until the Downfall, the last Numenorean king lived for 200 years. In ME the Numenoreans (or Dunedain, Dunedain means 'Edain of the West') mingled with 'lesser' Men and I think, as Gilrond said, that is why their lifespan became shorter yet. The ancestors of Aragorn were all Numenoreans though so he lived for 210 years.
