Happy Reformation Day
Mendelssohn's 5th would be appropriate.

Good going TB...
Listening Assignment for the Weak, er...Week: Frederick Delius's "Eventyr" Tone Poem. You MUST turn up the volume at about 5 minutes into it...it is crucial that you hear the splendour...

I know better than to turn up the volume on a tone poem, whatever that is. (Something) Sprach Zarathustra is enough to teach me that.

Really though...Delius was not bombastical. There's just so much colour going on in that tone poem...it really is like creation itself. There's a reason Thomas Beecham was such an advocate of Delius...in this tone poem, you find out why. I don't know why it isn't more famous...

I don't believe he is...
He's a composer as well. I'm hoping to get his series Songs of Innocence and Experience and the play he wrote about the girl that has Tourette syndrome.

OOOHHH.....You mean William BOLCOM. Way different guy. I want to hear his Piano Concerto...which, incidentally, is paired on a certain recording, with Bernstein's Sym.No.2

However I may have complained about Klemperer's Messiah. Some say it's one of the best for those that not like historical performances, but that's not my case. BTW, I'm still stuck in Bach's cantatas and don't know when I'll be able to listen to another thing. I listen to some of Vivaldi or Häendel and very seldom to other composers outside of the baroque period...

I've heard that Klemperer's reading of the Symphonie fantastique is among the best. I don't doubt it; it's just the type of work he was good at, though it may seem strange to think about those two at first. Quote:
I had a time when I was listening to Shostakovich's 4th and 10th on a regular basis, with some Strauss thrown in. These days I'm getting back into Beethoven mode. I was listening to his E flat minor variations for Piano, Violin, Cello trio. Small and obscure, but very good stuff .
