Flu Bug: 2003-04

Have you folks seen the concerns about the new flu strain expected to create a lot of havoc this winter? It has started early and appears to be hard to treat.

I saw where one health official in Colorado expects up to 70,000 deaths in the US from the flu this year. Colorado has been hit harder than most of us early.

Later in the article, I read that flu normally kills 36,000 people in the US each year... I had NO IDEA!!!

Yep, in fact the CDC was in my town six weeks ago as we had the highest concentration of flu cases in the Commonwealth.
This is going to be a bad year.

There was a flu epidemic in history that was really bad, I wonder if anyone knows anything about it (cuz I'm way too lazy right now to look it up myself).

I had the flu shot a couple of times in my lifetime and every time I get it, I get the damn flu. And whenever I don't get the flu shot, I don't get the flu. I don't know why that is. Maybe I'm just a freak.

The 1918 Spanish flu epidemic? It killed 675,000 people in the US alone.

I don't suppose this one will be so bad

though it will be bad enough

Elves don't get the flu Ru.

I hear this years flu is going to hit children harder than anyone else. Not sure of the count, but I think four in Colorado have died already.

I had flu last week. I had 39.7 C degrees. It was only flu though - and only for 3 days.

Yeah, this year there would probably be more flu cases than the past. But it's only flu - it's not a very seroius disease usually. Better flu than plague or somerthing worse.

Well, certian strains of the flu can be deadly, especially to the very young, the elderly, and to people with compromised immune systems.

Several of my friends got the flu already this year and believe me it was bad. One had to go to the hospital and yet the diagnosis was simply flu. So count yourself lucky RTB.

I also heard on the news that it will depend on where you live and your climate, as to when it will peak. Here in Ohio, flu season peaks around the first of the year.

Oh, that's terrible. 4 kids in Colorado have already died? How sad. I've been substituting mostly in elementary schools. Those little kids love to hug and touch everything in the classroom, and they have the worst cleanliness habits...

Actually, medical experts say that the best way to avoid getting sick, is to constantly wash your hands. My grandma use to always yell at us to wash our hands, and we thought she was crazy, but they have learned it is a key factor in staying healthy.

Urgl, don't remind me. *cough cough* A flu-epidemic is expected here soon. Nearly half of the people I talk to in school start to stay home sick or have throataches. I feel I'm next....

I believe the worldwide death toll was in the millions. It was spread by the many soldiers coming home from World War I.

The reason for that is the shot infects you with a very mild form of the flue virus. By HAVING that in you, it builds up your immunity to stronger flu viruses.

That's why you get sick .

Plus the whole 'freak' thing might help .

True but FYI this years vaccine doesn't adequately protect against the strain that actually is here. It mutated some according to the CDC. Oh, and last night the news story of the day was that the manufacturers of the vaccine don't have any more stock. Last year they had 13 million doses go unsold and so they made less overall this year. Now with the new strain and all the people being told to get the shot, if your doctor etc. runs out there isn't any more to be had.
Yikes!

I'd venture to guess that if it's going on in Europe and the US as well, that it's probably going to hit Canada too. Just my guess though.
