very silly groundhog!!

Today is Groundhog day!!!!

Unfortunetly the little nuisance saw his shadow, so he got scared, and now there will be six more weeks of winter

...

I am very exited, as this is one of my favorite holidays! I am going to watch GroundHog Day, the movie tonight!!!

Anyone else have any comments on Groundhog day?

Is it celebrated globally, or just some weird american thing?

nobody here even knows what a groundhog is.

But the movie is real amusing, I like Bill Murray.

Groundhog day is an ancient holiday, originally "Candlemas", on which if it is sunny, supposedly there is six more weeks of winter, and if cloudy, spring comes immediately. So, supposedly, if a groundhog sees his shadow on Groundhog Day, he is scared and goes into his burrow and waits six more weeks and then spring comes.

I heard that Phil always sees his shadow because of the spotlights.

I've always thought Groundhog Day was the most ridiculous thing. Elf Girl, is it really ancient? How can any American holiday be ancient? We just got here. Do you mean it's based on an old tradition? And I've always wondered how we know whether the big rat saw his shadow or not. I mean, even if it's casting a shadow human spectators can see, that doesn't mean the rodent saw it. I don't think animals even have any idea what a shadow is.

Well, if a rodent would see a shadow and recognise it as a shadow, it would be intelligent. So it would not be scared by the shadow, because it knows that it´s a shadow.

Bears are known to be scared of their reflection. If they see it in a car window or a lake/pond/puddle they will back away from it.

When Phil pokes his head out of his hole and he doesn't see his shadow, he comes out to play! And spring arrives!

But I think, if Phil sees his shadow, he should think it is a friends and come out play! And we have spring! But if he doesn't see his shadow, he should come out anyways! And we have spring!

Yes, Phil may be the most famous...but we must not neglect our own Canadian. Wiarton Willy, who is an albino groundhog. well actually, a couple of years ago Willy died so technically now we have Wiarton Willy the second, but they're both albinos.

ohhh! Albino groundhogs! cool! I once saw a 15 ft albino python at the zoo. I had to leave the room because I am afraid of snakes.

I think that silly old groundhog is nuts, becasue for the past week it had been below freezing and today it was almost 50 degrees!
