I'd agree, Smeagols awesome, Gollum's mean but this really belongs in the LotR movie section.

Well, this should only be in the movie section if we're talking about Smeagol.Gollum in the context of the movie.

Because we could talk about book-Gollum and it would be all good. Of course, if you're using the movie's description, then you've kinda tipped the balance.

I like Gollum, in the book, quite a bit - even evil Gollum.

I also like the movie's interpretation of his character, so I'm prepared to talk about either.

Smeagol is very touching. He really was good, once. In my opinion he is the best example of the evil-ness of the Ring.

This thread needs to be about Gollum in the book if it is to stay in the book forum. If it is to be about the movie, I will move it to the movie forum.

Gollum

Gollum is strange in the book but even stranger in the movie.

I totally agree with this, and I think Tolkien even hints at this as well when Gandalf was speaking of Smeagol's life....

I totally disagree, I felt the movie was pretty dead on with how I read the character Gollum in the book....

In this place will I abide, and my heirs, unto the ending of the world.'

'Then Tuor arrayed himself in the hauberk, and set the helm upon his head, and he girt himself with the sword; black were sheath and belt with clasps of silver. Thus armed he went forth from Turgon's hall, and stood upon the high terraces of Taras in the red light of the sun. None were there to see him, as he gazed westward, gleaming in silver and gold, and he knew not that in that hour he appeared as one of the Mighty of the West, and fit to be father of the kings of the Kings of Men beyond the Sea, as it was indeed his doom to be; but in the taking of those arms a change came upon Tuor son of Huor, and his heart grew great within him. And as he stepped down from the doors the swans did him reverence, and plucking each a great feather from their wings they proffered them to him, laying their long necks upon the stone before his feet; and he took the seven feathers and set them in the crest of his helm, and straightway the swans arose and flew north in the sunset, and Tuor saw them no more.' -Of Tuor and his Coming to Gondolin

Gollum seemed to me to be pretty accurately portrayed. His skin was the wrong color, and Slinker didn't light his eyes green, but that's about all I can think of.

Smeagol is pretty cool, and I thought he had really changed, but his old self gained control, and that nearly cost Sam and Frodo their lives. I've never really liked Gollum, but I pitied and even had had a glimmer of like for Smeagol.

I think Dunedain that L@ur@y Elven Warrior was talking about his face and physical traits. Like I seem to remember reading in FOTR that Gollum had webbed feet...like a swans, and Gwaimer is right about the green light. But if you looked close enough when Faramir is talking to Gollum in Henneth Anun and he says "Because he took my...PRECIOUSS" there is DEFINITELY a gleam there if only a pale blue one.
I found that the book Gollum was less pitiable and sad than the movie Gollum. I couldn't imagine him as wretched because all of the LOTR baddies have rather charismatic personalities and strong will powers, while Gollum is weak. I felt no pity for Gollum because I hadn't seen him...but now he's a truely pathetic creature for me to imagine.

I have to agree. I always hated Gollum in the books, but once you see him its almost impossible not to feel bad. I also noticed the gleam in his eyes there. It is soon after this that Gollum wins over Smeagol again and there is the forshadowing of Shelob. I think that Gollum is one of the most well done characters in the book and the movie.

Except that I accidentally said Slinker instead of Stinker. Yup, picked the right title!

Gollum wasn't exactly what I pictured him to be.

You find the torment and mental anguish of a wretched, pitiable creature to be hilarious?

i thought it was cool how tolkien made gollum be the one to destroy the ring. i mean, as i was reading the books i didnt expect he would be the one to do it.... after all he was corrupted by it the most, other than sauron himself

I don't think Sauron was corrupted by the Ring, rather he gave his corrupted-ness to the ring as he made it.
