Amusement Park and Roller Coasters

I was wondering how many people are into amusement parks and in particular roller coasters. I'm going through roller coaster withdrawal right now.

The largest regional amusement park in the US - Great Adventure - is a half hour from where I live and now I can't go there until they reopen in March.

They have on their website though - an animated video of their new roller coaster they're building Superman: Ultimate Flight. It looks cool. You ride it head first. My favorite two are currently Medusa and Nitro. Nitro is 230ft high and the first drop is 215ft almost straight down and goes 80+ mph.

Can't wait until opening day - I need to be one of the first on Superman. For the time being, I guess I'll have to content myself with watching the Nitro and Superman videos that I downloaded.

Great Adventure also has the largest drive thru safari outside of Africa and Hurricane Harbor - a huge water park.

I once absolutely loved roller coasters, but I think I've outgrown them. They just don't thrill me like they used to. Maybe I need to go to that record-high wooden-track one in Nevada that goes underground for a stretch, and the thrill will return.

Big, rickety wooden coasters are still cool, but the smooth steel coasters have to be very big, very fast, or somewhat innovative to entice me to wait in an hour-plus line for it. That head-first Superman ride sounds quite enthralling. I would wait a while for that one (maybe not four months, but... you know).

I love roller coasters. I can't wait until our Senior trip. I plan to ride every roller coaster at Six Flags Over Georgia.

I've only been on a real roller coaster once - at the West Edmonton Mall last year on our choir trip. All I can say is I'll never be doing that again. It was fun, but it freaked me right out. Guess for me it's one of those things I can do once but that's fine for me (like, I don't need to do it again...). Aaaaaaaahhhhhhh!

I used to like that stuff when I was a kid, but when I grew up, they began to make me sick. Most noticably after my first pregnancy, something changed in my body. All rides may be called "The Pukemobil" for me. The last ride I attempted was the kiddie teacup ride with my (then) little girl at "Dollywood". Thirty seconds into it, I started yelling "Stop! Stop!" as I was visibly turning green and VERY soon to throw up. It was embarrasing! Now even watching a carousel turn makes me nauseous. Though I used to enjoy the roller coaster at Kings Island in Cinncinatti, Now watching them on TV gives me an imaginary coronary condition! We havn't been to an amusement park (or taken a vacation) for ten years. They are just too expensive for our budget, and my camping days are OVER! (Must have soft bed)

Same with me Liz, I still enjoy rollercoasters but rotary motion gets me every time now! Age taking its toll I suppose.

Remember going on the "Big One" at Blackpool back when it was still the tallest in the world. The initial climb seemed to take forever!

You too, huh! Maybe the more times you've "thrown up", the easier it is to do!

Rollercoasters kinda lost their thrill for me sometime in my late teens.

Prefer a motorbike for thrills now (not that I own one at present) 140mph on a bike is fun!!! (don't try it at home kids )

Jersey Devil, that is the best news I've heard all week! Nitro, Medusa, and Batman are awsome, but this will really top it off. Ever since I saw the flying roller coaster design on the Discovery Channel, I've been very anxious for them to build one at Great Adventure. So JDevil, do you mind if I accompany you on opening day?

Btw, Khamul, I heard that theyre building a similar roller coaster at Six Flags Georgia.

Nope - come along - it'll be fun. The more people the better. My cousins are supposed to be getting their 3 park pass soon and I already have mine for 2003.

The last couple of times I haven't ridden Batman (assuming you mean the one next to Nitro, not Chiller) - the lines were outside. Batman is best at night though.

In April or May I got to ride Medusa 6 times in a row without getting off. The park usually closes at 8:00 during the spring - but they decided to keep it open till 8:30 - but they closed off the lines to the rides. Anyone already on the ride could continue to ride it. Since I was already on the last ride for the night - I rode it for a half hour more. The only thing they stopped it for was to let the people that wanted to get off - get off.

By the way - Chiller: Batman & Robin - is much better now that they've redone the restraint system. It used to bang my head around too much - now it's a reallly cool and fun ride. 0-70mph in 3 seconds straight up is so cool.

Do you have a season pass for GA?

I like coasters-but I've been to Canada's Wonderland so often I'm bored of those. I prefer rickety wooden coasters-more authentic

I probably will get a season pass this year because I will have my liscence and I can drive there with my friends and not rely on parents.

Have you ever tried QBot? (the fastpass thing) Last time I was there, my friends and I got it. It does cost a little money, but we all feel it was worth it. We rode Nitro 6 times, Batman and Medusa 3 times, each of the Batman and Chiller ones once, and some of the other ones once.

We thought about it a couple of times. Usually we go when it's not a nice day out. Less crowds that way.

This should probably be done through PM - but oh. How does QBot work? With the old system they assigned times of when you could go on the rides a head of time. I don't like running by anyone else's schedule - so I didn't like that. Usually we just go and walk around and go on the rides as the mood hits us. Nitro and Medusa are generally fast moving lines - never really had to wait long in line there.

Have you ever been first car on Nitro? It's wild - the track looks like it curves inward on the first drop - so you can't see it and it looks like you're heading straight down. I like the back better though - because it gives you more air. The zero g's are awesome.

My inner ear is screwed up (it's genetic, curse my lot) and so roller caoseters are out for me. Yep, I'm with Lizra and Draken, only it's not age taking its toll for me. Suffice it to say that I haven't been able to spin around twice without getting significantly dizzy since I was ten. I'm twelve now, if you care.

You know, now that you mention it, they did build a ride called The Superman at Six Flags over Georgia. I've head my cousin talk about it and he said that it rocked. I probably would get a season pass if I lived close enough, but Atlanta is about a 3 1/2 - 4 hour drive from here.
