To my knowledge, the Hobbit, and the Lord of the Rings consists of four books. Then there is the Silmarillion, Unfinished Tales, and the Histories of Middle-earth. The HoMe is twelve volumes. Then there is the book of Letters of Tolkien. That is 19 books total if I didn't miss anything. I have seen many of these books at the local book store, and the library. However, some of the HoMe are hard to find and have to be ordered. They seem to be more readily available on line.

Don't forget "The Monsters and the Critics and Other Essays" and also "Pictures by J.R.R Tolkien".

There are four Middle-earth books that Tolkien wrote and got published in his lifetime: The Hobbit, The Lord of the Rings (actually one heroic romance {not a novel} and not a Trilogy), The Adventures of Tom Bombadil and The Road Goes Ever On (with Donald Swann). After his death his son Christopher put together a Silmarillion and published it, he also put together various essays and stories and made Unfinished Tales, before embarking on the History of Middle-earth series ( consisting of twelve volumes), which he finished in 1996. Also of note are the Letters of J. R. R. Tolkien by Humpherey (sp?) Carpenter, which was put together with the assistance of Christopher Tolkien.

There's other books by Tolkien that are not related to his mythology though, my favourite is Leaf By Niggle. But there's also The Smith of Wooton Major, Sir Gawain and The Green Knight, Pearl, and Sir Orfeo, On Fairy Stories, The Monsters and The Critics and Other Essays (brought up in the above post), The Homecoming of Beorhtnoth Beorhthelm's Son, Farmer Giles of Ham, Roverandom and I believe more besides.

Welcome Matto.

I don't know about that. There is something called the Tolkien Companion, but Tolkien has never written any 'Companion' as far as I know.

Yes Inoldonil. The Tolkien Companion by J.E.A. Tyler I believe. I know it is subject for debate, but the most helpful book I used through the challenge of reading the books was The Complete Guide to Middle-earth. I also found that you have to be careful useing a guide or a companion. They can ruin the story for you.

The Tolkien Companion helped me through the LOTR...I loved it. It's basically an enlarged appendix. It really helped with the confusing terminology.

I have now read The Adventures of Tom Bombadil.
I found it very confusing!!
Well, for the first it was written in english, and I'm from Norway so I suppose that helped.
I was suprised when I found out that it was filled with poems and songs, but I liked some of them especally Errantry!
Who is it about anyway???

How many books? "lots and none at all".

Norway is one of my favorite countries. Would you be kind enough to tell me which town you are in? Hope to go back next spring after the snow is plowed from the passes.

Thanks.

Actually having lived in the Southwest for over a decade I only have seen snow in the dictionary. Now on the East coast of the US I expect to see it again.
One hr., north? I've been the northern route, Trondheim, Loftus, etc. Normally you do have snow by now don't you? I know the mountain passes don't get plowed until mid May per my last visit and the current information from Scan Tours.

Well, we have snow. But it came in november so it's just lying in there, it's mostly ice!!
Drammen is actually one hour west/south of Oslo.
I'm used to snow to Christmas, but I'm not sure there will be any

Then you have Unfinished Tales. The Book of Lost Tales is the early myth, or something like that. It is the first two books of the HoMe.
