Try this out...

Apparently this is a famous little problem that has been around for ages, but I've only just been introduced to it and thought it was quite fun:

http://crux.baker.edu/cdavis09/roses.html

Plus some of the comments sent in by people doing the puzzle are quite amusing, in a bitter and twisted sort of way.

Once you get it, no spoiling it for other people please!

*snicker* watches as people suffer from brain-farts.

Hate to be insufferable, but when I did this ages ago, I got it right off. (.... course I guess that makes me uber-dumb )

Nice little test. I figured it out in my third try. I'm not sure what that makes me, dumb or smart. (No need to answer, rethorical question. )

It had taken Dr. Duke well over a year himself, and he would always explain that the smarter you were, the longer it took to figure it out.
I suspect he just said that to make himself feel better. And by extension, me.

I think I'm just over-thinking it.

Yes, you are. Believe me, it's excruciatingly obvious once you get it... and you'll be kicking yourself.

I read the first sentence of Tessar's spoiler, and you know what? It's not that obvious. I don't feel quite so silly now.

I knew there was some reason (highlight below for spoiler)

... that all the answers were even numbers.

That was my thinking too - your spoiler was as far as I got
I don't think it's that obvious - it relies on being able to recognise that (spoiler)

a dice with dots on it looks a bit like a rose

which you either see or you don't.

I'm not going anywhere near the other puzzles. I need my sanity!

Yay, I got it on my first try . It took a while though, I spent some time scratching my head thinking "what the heck is a petal?" until I finally got off me lazy arse to fetch my dictionary . It seemed quite obvious after that.
