Named after a character?
I hope this is a new subject of a thread.
In today's paper I read, that there are four Gandalfs, four Frodos and one Bilbo in Finland. Wonder how it feels for a little finnish boy to be called Gandalf.. ![]() Could you name your kid after a character in any of the books? Or would you like your own name to be taken from a Tolkien-book? I put this here, on this forum, because I thought the people naming their kids this, were inspired by the movies, not the books.

I think there was a thread similar to this, but am not sure.

A lot of people were named after books characters when Lord of the Rings first came out. I don't think Jackson's movies will inspire anyone to name anyone after LotR characters, but we'll see.

If it was a relatively "normal" sounding name, yes. Never something like "Frodo" "Bilbo" "Bladorthin" "Ingwe". I remember when I was reading the Book of Lost Tales V. I (or maybe Unfinished Tales, I was reading them recently), I was thinking that if I had two girls, I'd give them names from there, but I don't remember which names. Oh well, guess that's not gonna happen.

I always thought that Arien was a relatively normal name...close enough to Erin or Ariel. I plan on naming my daughter that if I have one. I know it's a name from the Silmarillion but I don't think I would name my kids from lotr....I can't hink of any "normal" names...I knew a girl named Galadriel when I was in ballet though...she was a few years older than me. Arwen, isn't so bad either even if I don't care for her character in the book or movie much

I know two girls with the middle name, "Lorien." I can see naming my daughter that.

In this place will I abide, and my heirs, unto the ending of the world.' 'Then Tuor arrayed himself in the hauberk, and set the helm upon his head, and he girt himself with the sword; black were sheath and belt with clasps of silver. Thus armed he went forth from Turgon's hall, and stood upon the high terraces of Taras in the red light of the sun. None were there to see him, as he gazed westward, gleaming in silver and gold, and he knew not that in that hour he appeared as one of the Mighty of the West, and fit to be father of the kings of the Kings of Men beyond the Sea, as it was indeed his doom to be; but in the taking of those arms a change came upon Tuor son of Huor, and his heart grew great within him. And as he stepped down from the doors the swans did him reverence, and plucking each a great feather from their wings they proffered them to him, laying their long necks upon the stone before his feet; and he took the seven feathers and set them in the crest of his helm, and straightway the swans arose and flew north in the sunset, and Tuor saw them no more.' -Of Tuor and his Coming to Gondolin "Oh. Hobbit names are OK. Nothing wrong with Sam, Rosie or Elanor

![]() I doubt I would give my kid a name from Middle-earth, at least not a first name. A second name could be fine, but not too "different" or known (Galadriel and Elrond are both out of the Question, in other words). Wonder how anybody would react to Maitimo though...

I remember seeing on some game show a family that had a daughter named Arwen, and one named Lorien. Those aren't really too bad.
And I remembered my daughter-names; Laurelin and Telperion. ![]() ![]() Quote:

![]() But I still don't understand how someone can name their son Gandalf: the character is wonderful, but probably the boy won't love his name when he's young. Somehow Gandalf, to me, is the name of an older man. Don't ask me why. ![]()

Perhaps because Gandalf is thousands of years old?

If I had a little boy I might name him Sam, and I'll read him LotR and ask him if he legally wants to change his name to Samwise, or if I have a little girl I'll go through the indexes and find a relatively nice normalish (but not too normal) name. I wouldn't pick something like Galadriel or Elrond, becasue I wouldn't want my kids having to go through years of counselling!
