What order should the movies be watched in?

I was wondering, if you've never seen the movies or you are having a marathon or something, should you watch them by episode number or release date? Should you watch the new ones first or the old ones? I'm thinking the new ones, because everyone pretty much knows the story anyway so it won't like give everything away and spoil the suprise or anything. What do you think?

If I had never seen them before, I'd want to watch Episode I-III first and then move on to IV-VI. Not becuase I think those are better, they're not, just that it makes more sense to watch them in chronological order.

Now that I've seen them all, I'd just watch Revenge of the Sith and move on to the older ones.

Personally I'd stick to ep. IV-V-VI and if you still haven't seen enough films for the day after that, see whichever you like best out of I-II-III. I think they're more exciting without seeing the prequals. Better storylines too IMO. Vader just ain't as scary if you have seen Anakin.

I think the scripts for episodes 1,2, and 3 where very well done, however it was the direction that failed them horribly.

So I agree with "Lord" Farimir Captain of Gondor, if you have not seen the movies at all, I would say watch them numerically from 1-6.

i found that the best way to watch the movies is IV-VI then I-III. i really enjoyed watching them this way because in the classic trilogy, all the things that happen in the prequal trilogy are like a big myth. As you watch further and further into the classic trilogy, some things are revealed (number one of course being all that luke i am your father business) but the entire story is not told. Then you watch I-III, and you're just like, Oh, i get it now. So for that reason, i think that the ideal way to watch starwars is to watch IV-VI then I-III.

If I was haveing a marathon I'd go from 1 to 6, as it shows the plot in a very clear perspecive.

This is my preference too. I also think this would be the preferred order if one has never seen the movies. And as Sam said, if you watch 1, 2, and 3 first, you have no sense of the unfolding of the story bit by bit in 4, 5, and 6.

Yep. I, II, III basically just took IV, V, VI and made a storyline before them. It's almost like having two different trilogies. The only difference: they each spoil the other. Personally, I prefer the spoiling the way it's done in the later ones, as opposed to the earlier ones.
