Naming your kids after LOTR characters
Would you do it?
Though this won't apply to me for a long time, I've considered the idea for sure. I've always thought Eowyn would be a really nice name. Tinuviel has a nice ring to it too... probably as a middle name though. And you?

I would consider it, especially for a middle name. I might even look through the appendices to make up a girl's "___wen" name. Eowyn would be pretty though. Don't think I could use anything as obviuos as Frodo or Bilbo though, even for a middle name

I've said before, my niece's name is Laurelin. I think it is a beautiful name. However, I am not sure about too many names in the books. They are really different. I mean, you pick names for your kids that are comman or kind of unpopuliar, and they still hate their name. I think it can be an iffy thing. I think Arwen is pretty, Laurelin, how about Rose? I see names for females are more acceptable from the books. Even the cool guy names would still be kind of strange outside of the story except for Sam, Bill, Michael, and even Merry.

I might name a daughter Elanor. Since it sounds like "Eleanor", only LOTR fans will understand the reference. Everyone else will just think that I can't spell.

I'm naming my first girl Lorien. Hopefully my wife will agree, because that's what I'm naming her. The end.

Lorien isn't too bad. The kids at school can call her "Lori" for short.

The only LOTR names I would consider using are Sam and Bill, or maybe Shelob (just kidding on that last one).

I think it is cool. It's only a middle name, my second one actually. It really confuses my teachers when they ask me to write my full name too.
One kid even calls me Mithrandir instead of my first name.

Yep, it was sindarian (sp?) for grey pilgrim.
Gandalf would probably fit if it had been my middle name instead of Mithrandir, but it doesn't sound right to me since it isn't my middle name. So..... :

i'd also probably give my kids (if i ever have any, which is doubtful) after LotR characters, but like a lot of you have said, for middle names with a more "normal" first name (or vice versa). also, nearly all my favorite names in the books belong to characters whose fate i would not wish on a child - Feanor, for example...
but it'd be funny in a sick sort of way to have siblings Finwe, Feanor, Finrod, etc. etc.... at family reunions no one but Tolkien fans would even attempt to yell at them all at once! aryne * PS - i'm back. for awhile at least. |
