Modern ME
what do you think a modern ME would be like? I'm referring to a ME with today's society and technology
I think it's almost a given that elves would be up into technology (computers, hi-tech weapons etc) and hobbits would be much remove from society.... kind of like the Amish Men would be... well, much like we are.... Dwarves would be.... cast as hobbits in war epics of the War of the Ring *giggles* how about y'all?

that's now quite what I mean sure, as far as we're concerened but what about the Elves and stuff you know?
with all of the the history and culture and the long-term effects of the War of the Ring? I guess I'm the only one here with an overactive imagination.... oh well

You're not alone, Halley! I, too, have an Unusually Large Portion Of My Brain Dedicated To Variations On Tolkien's Works!
Hmmm...the hobbits wouldn't be as far removed from society as the Amish, but they would mostly live in the country. Elves would also be CEO's of companies and own web sites such as ebay, and host web services like AOL, only it would be MEOL: Middle Earth Online. The ents will have formed the MEBI (Middle Earth Bureau of Investigation) in search of the entwives and to solve othe ME mysteries.

*Struggling to think of Lurtz in a business suit and tie...*
I think the Moria orcs work at McDonalds. The Balrog could even be their grill! Seriously,though... I think the dwarves would be the guys who pop out of the manholes and other blue collar-type workers. The elves would be the world's creative minds. (Poets, actors, the like.) Hobbits would be rural farmers and cliquey small-towners. Men would be pretty much like men are now. Wizards and higher elves could be teachers and professors.

MM said it best, this is Middle-earth. We're living in the Seventh Age and the War of the Ring took place over 6,000 years ago, according to J. R. R. Tolkien. Whether you accept the primitive or "scientific" mythology Tolkien put forward, this is true. Even discounting Tolkien and all his writings, we are still living in Midgard.

Yes, yes, but I think HB was just speculating about what things would be like if hobbits, elves, etc. still coexisted w/ humans.

Azalea's right. Let's not get technical about this, please! We're just trying to have fun.

My self being an elf, I must say I work with children. So, Renille is very close to the mark. But I still have a love of lore.

Those of us who have overactive imaginations like to let them run wild. If you don't like it, Nolendil, then don't post. Simple as that.

It is a strange thing for an administrator to be lectured by a regular poster. But as I am an administrator, I will use that power to irritate and nit-pick all I want -- until the horse is "being very, very dead" as Binbiniqegabenik of Yiqanuc would say.
Continuing along this line of thinking, just to be difficult, when azalea says "Yes, yes, but I think HB was just speculating about what things would be like if hobbits, elves, etc. still coexisted w/ humans.", I might say that Hobbits and Elves (at least) still do coexist with humans. Hobbits are becoming hard to find and the Elves are either mere wraiths or faded, but they still coexist with us. So put that in your pipe and smoke it.

I'm feeling bold, Nolendil. Must you be so technical and exact? It is my personal opinion that if Tolkien were here, he would be encouraging us to keep going with this.
(I'm not giving up till you do. )

I would have to agree with Nolendil. We're in ME. It's the 7th age.
