Trolls Talk?!!?
I thought I had read somewhere that trolls were created so stupid that they were never able to grasp speech. So I suppose the three trolls that Bilbo found in the woods were, comparitively, geniuses, cream of the crop trolls I suppose. What's up with that? And why do they speak with cockney accents?

I believe Sauron when he bred the different breeds of Trolls (Cave Trolls, Hill Trolls etc) and the olog-hai He made them more intelligent so they could learn the abillity of speech.
As for the cockney accent, perhaps tolkien wanted to make them look more dumb |

I believe this is covered in the Appendices. You'll look for the section that's divided up by Peoples, and their languages. One on Elves, and Dwarves and Men and such, and 'other Races'. You'll find Trolls in 'other Races'.

Those trolls were geniuses. Most trolls could not speak (the Olog-hai were taught the Black Speech)

Well they weren't from London so they had to be from somewhere else.
That almost makes sense. |

I hated that play. I thought all trolls were capable of speech. And as for geniuses, they did set a trap for the dwarves.

I thought the troll's cockney accent was hillarius..."Mutton today, mutton yesterday, and blimey, if it don't look like mutton agin tomorrer!" (quote from memory...so forgive mistakes)
