frustrating friends 2
This is kind of like the other frustrating friends thread (Do YOUR friends frustrate you?), only this one is not related to pronunciation of names:
Does anyone you know ask you the most stupid questions about the ending and details of the story? for example: "At Helm's Deep, do you reckon the battle would have actually ever started if that old guy hadn't accidentally fired the arrow?" "Do they get to destroy the Ring?" Also, one of my friends told me she wanted to learn Elvish just because Legolas is an Elf. I told her he dies in the end Does this occur with anyone else?

After seeing the movie I had someone ask me
What's a hobbit? And on my comment about their height- Oh, they are short?

I have a friend named Kyle who thought Gandalf was saved from Orthanc because he turned that little moth into a giant moth and flew away on it. I had to explain to him that it was Gwaihir.
He also thinks that Lotr would be better if everyone had pistols and Gandalf was armed with a machine gun.

I have friends who say they have the books at home (but won't read them) and they keep asking me who 'She' (Gollum: She could do it, precious, yes She could do it) is. I told them that 'She' is a giant spider and she kills Frodo (actually, I kind of hinted to that, to make them nervous ).
People ask me all the time, "Does Frodo die?" I'm like "Are you kidding?? What makes you think I'm gonna tell you?!" And my mom's always saying things like "Is Aragorn the king? Does he die?" Eveyone always asks me "Does so-and-so die?" Arg!! What makes them think I'd spoil it!!!??

My friend who didn't even bother seeing the film spent a whole day asking me stupid questions like Why does Frodo have to take the ring, why not another hobbit? Why can't he just give it to someone else? Duh!

I agree about "Does so-and-so die?" being a very annoying question. Also "Why are these tree's talking" and "WHAT? Why is the guy-in-purple (aka Boromir) alive again?" (And she was looking at Eomer when she asked that ) are some of the annoying/stupid questiiiins people have asked me. Also, when you are watching the movie for the first time with a bunch of your friends, and through the ENTIRE people are asking "What happens next?", "Who is that?", "Where are they going", "Whats that thing flying around that guys head?". Really annoying, when you are just trying to watch the movie.

I've heard a number of incredibly stupid and annoying questions since the films have come out. You'd think people would actually THINK once in a while before making such fools of themselves.
Here's my top ten list of dumb questions: 10. Why didn't Peter Jackson make Bree a happy and nice place rather than one that was dark and frightening? 9. Why didn't Aragorn carry around his broken sword? 8. Why didn't Jackson give us Tom Bombadil and Goldberry? 7. Why wasn't Gandalf the Grey in FOTR more decisive and a real leader like he was in Gondor in the books? 6. Why was Gimli and Pippin used for comic relief? 5. Why did Gandalf and the troops arrive at Helm's Deep from the West like the books rather than the East? 4. Why didn't a mortally wounded little Frodo ride to the fords on that big white horse all by himself like in the books? 3. Do you think, like I do, that Sam was overloving towards Frodo? 2. Why wasn't Faramir acting nicer and why didn't he let Frodo go earlier instead of taking him to Osiligath? 1. Why did the movies show all that fighting in Moria, Amon Hen, and Helm's Deep? |

Actually #s 2,4,6,8 aren't that dumb. They should have been more like the book.

I was talking to a girl on msn the other day who hadn't read LotR: the conversation was actually quite comical:
Her: Does Frodo destroy the Ring? Me: [thinking] <well actually, technically, he doesn't, soooo...> No. Her: Omg what happens? Me: Gollum gets it. Her: Wow. That I did not see. What, does he kill them? Me: Well you know how Elves go to Valinor when they die? Frodo and Sam both physically leave Middle-earth and go to Valinor. Her: Okay this is really important to me because he's my favourite character: does Legolas die? Me: Well I'll just say this: Legolas goes to Valinor as well. Her: Noooooooooooo Me: Gimli follows him. Her: NOOOOoooooooo. What happens to Aragorn? Me: He dies [thinks] <eventually>. He kills himself [thinks again] <kinda...>. Her: Omg what does Arwen do then? Me: She dies too. Her: Oooooohhh. Me: And Merry gets a grave next to Éomer's and Pippin gets crushed by a troll. [thinking] Merry: that's not even in the story, just in the appendices. Pippin: it doesn't necessarily kill him, but he does!!! Her: So all the main characters die. That's a bit off. Muahahahaha!!!!

I think the worst question that I consistently hear is: why is Frodo hero of the story when he's so weak?
(Somewhere, a point is missed.)

BB - those aren't stupid questions. Most of those things were at the heart of the story or just junk that Jackson put in to make his little action movie.

All of my friends are avid readers, so it doesn't happen to me.
I had a co-worker ask me last year how the heck Gandalf survived. I just laughed and reminded him of the scene where he says to Bilbo "Do not take me for a conjuror of cheap tricks." When he wanted to know more I went into a brief explanation of the Istari. Within the week he bought the books and got down to reading them! Yay!

>> Personally, I don't mind people asking me dumb questions about LotR, or The Sil or UT or anything else about JRRT's masterpieces. IMO, I'm an ambassador of Tolkien ... and I will assimilate them. MWHAHAHAHAHAHAA!!!!!! Unfortunately, my roommate refuses to read the books. She prefers murder mysteries instead, and sticks very closely to that genre. That is my current goal in life, to get her to read the books. Luckily, she isn't interested in seeing the movies either. (*phew*) So, she won't be given erroneous information through PJ's little fiasco either. Quote:

*shivers* me too
Arwen's "warrior princess" debut was... well...*laugh* But I don't think Elijah would have done the scene justice, better to read the book. It's always worth another read. Sorry to go off topic, I don't have any frustrating friends

after FOTR came out, i remember some guy i went to school with at the time asking why it ended like it did and complaining that the ending was stupid... then i told him that it was the first movie in a trilogy.
needless to say that was the end of that conversation...

Oh yes, I really enjoyed the "huh?"'s and "what the?"'s coming from all over the crowd at the end of FotR when I watched it.
And tip: here's a way to ensure you don't have any frustrating friends. A long time ago, I corrupted all my friends into reading LotR and hence, I don't have any frustrating friends or dumb questions to answer. As it is, my friends usually ask each other the dumb questions anyway. "How did Gandalf live again?" "I don't know. I think it's because he's God or God's servant or something." "Why?' "You know how he says he's servant of the secret fire of Anor or something? Anor must be God or Heaven or something up there." "So he's, like, the messiah?" "Yeah, I think so." "Whoa." "Yeah."
