Arwen's necklace...
**So before big industry starts producing "Arwen's Necklace!" and selling cheap versions of them for $34.99 a pop, I have a question:
Is there anything in the books about her necklace? Eowyn's, yes, but Arwen? Or was that simply an idea for the movie to illustrate the giving up of her immortal life?

I don't remember Arwens necklace being mentioned in the book, it was probably one of those scenes to add an aditional storyline ontop of the first one. Y i do not know, especially as there r LOADS of different storylines going on already!

When I first saw the Movie, I thought that would be Peter Jacksons adaptation of the Elessar, as the giving of the gifts would be cut from the Theatrical version.

Arwen gave Frodo a necklace, yeah, but I don't think there was any necklace that served the same purpose as the one in the movie.

That was my thought too CBG - that this represents the elessar.
Although, if that's the case, is this the original or the duplicate? And wasn't that not a necklace but in a headband, or is that only after Aragorn is made king and they remake it? I'm confused............ |

Didn't look like a big green emerald to me, which is what the Elessar is supposed to be. Looked to me like the top of an Avon perfume bottle - you know how they sometimes have those bottles with fancy tops. I've seen them for sale at garage sales for, like, 5 cents.

They are selling a sterling silver version of Arwen;s necklace at the official online LotR shop. Its quite nice, I would buy it, but I dont wear jewelry that much so there's not much point in doing so.

It reminds me of the medical symbol that you see on ambulances and the like. If it DOES represents the Elessar, then it's WAY off the story-line. Though I suppose, no one would know except readers. Did they call it something other than "the necklace" in the movie? If so,I didn't quite catch it...

In the books (ROTK, Many Partings) Arwen says:
'A gift I will give you. For I am the daughter of Elrond. I shall not go with him now when he departs to the Havens; for mine is the choice of Luthien, and as she so have I chosen, both the sweet and the bitter. But in my stead you shall go, Ring-bearer, when the time comes, and if you then desire it. If your hurts grieve you still and the memory of your burden is heavy, then you may pass into the West, until all your wounds and weariness are healed. But wear this now in memory of Elfstone and Evenstar with whom your life has been woven!' And she took a white gem like a star that lay upon her breast hanging upon a silver chain, and she set the chain about Frodo's neck, 'When the memory of the fear and the darkness troubles you,' she said, 'this will bring you aid.' So my question is: If Arwen has already given this necklace to Aragorn in FOTR, how does Frodo finally get it? How will they do this? This is what represents Arwen's gift to Frodo,... but Aragorn has it!! I don't understand PJ's decision to do that. And speaking of gems! Where is Aragorn's Green gem? |

exactly what I was thinking, Eowyn! possibly the elfstone is replaced by the prominent placement of Aragorn's signet ring of Gondor?

I imagined the necklace as a visual representation of Arwen giving up her immortality. *shrug* I don't think it's meant to "take over" Elessar.
Hopefully Elessar will turn up in the extended version....

So is Aragorn going to end up being the biggest bespangled and decked out Pimp-King ever to come out of Arnor, or what??
Let's see.... he has: - The ring of Barahir (given to him by Elrond) - Arwen's pendant - Signet ring of Gondor - The Sceptre of Annuminas (same as the Sceptre of Arnor??) - The Crown of Gondor (The crown of Earnur) - Some Star on a silver band - that I guess he wears as a tiara - The green gem (i'm not sure what that is,... been trying to find it. Is it the "Elfstone"? Is that why they call him that?) - Anduril, the sword reforged. What other kind of BLING BLING am I forgetting? |

I just thought Elessar was yet ANOTHER name for Strider, Aragorn son of Arathorn, called Estel "Hope" by the Eldar, Isuldur's heir, yadda yadda yadda.... If it's just another name for Aragorn (as I thought), I don't understand what you mean by "I don't think it's meant to 'take over' Elessar" (who said they thought it did - I didn't see that in the thread?) Also then, I don't understand what you mean you hope "Elessar will turn up in the extended version". Someone please help! --------- Oh! I found the name of the "Star Tiara" thing he wears. Appendix A, The North-kingdom and the Dunedain, a couple of pages in, footnote #3: "... in Arnor, whose kings wore no crown, but bore a single white gem, the Elendilmir, Star of Elendil, bound on their brows with a silver fillet. ..." |
